Do What We Say Not What We DoIf you listen to what comes out of the White House these days you would think they want everyone to be like we are. Well, that may be true but only up to a point you see.
An editorial in Today's
San Jose Mercury News sums it up nicely.
In brief, at a recent United Nations meeting (attended by more than 100 countries) the goal was to document and advance the cause of gender equality as outlined in a platform adopted at the 1995 U.N. women's conference in Beijing, which the United States endorsed during the Clinton administration. Organizers had hoped to adopt a declaration before the opening session reaffirming the Beijing platform. However, as attendees soon found out that, the United States would not be signing any document supporting a woman's right to have an abortion.
Even though Roe vs. Wade ensures that right in the United States and the thrust of the U.N. platform isn't about abortion rights, but rather about ending discrimination against women in 12 different areas, ranging from health to education to employment. Ignoring that the U.N. strategy on reproductive health is resulting in
reduced abortion rates around the world.
To quote the editors, "The president should stop pandering to abortion opponents and start putting U.S. funds toward helping the world's poorest and most-vulnerable women."
