WalMart, Choice & You

Dear Valued Customer,

Thank you for contacting us at Walmart.com regarding women?s
prescriptions for birth control. Your comments and concerns are very
important to us as we strive to meet your needs.

Wal-Mart does not carry emergency contraceptives. Our pharmacists may
decline to fill a prescription based on personal convictions. However,
they must find another pharmacist, either at Wal-Mart or another
pharmacy, who can assist you by filling your prescription.

Again, we thank you for your comments regarding this issue.

Sincerely,
Customer Service at Walmart.com

in reply to:

Dear Wal-Mart Pharmacies,

All over the country I have noticed a disturbing trend of
pharmacies refusing to fill women's prescriptions for birth
control. When a woman and her doctor decide that a prescription
for contraception is in the woman's best interest, a third party
has no right to override that decision. Pharmacies must ensure
that patients get their doctor-prescribed medication without
delay or inconvenience. I ask that your company assure me and
your other customers that no woman seeking prescription
contraception will be turned away by your company's pharmacies.

No doubt a majority of your customers take for granted that
women should be able to receive their birth control despite the
personal beliefs of the individual pharmacist. Timely access to
contraception is central to women's health, autonomy, and
equality. We must trust women and their doctors to make their
own reproductive health decisions.

I thank you, in advance, for protecting your customer's health
by ensuring your pharmacy will guarantee women have unhindered
access to their prescribed medications.

Thank you for your attention and support.

Mailing Lists For Sale

The parents of Terri Schiavo have authorized reports the New York Times, a conservative direct-mailing firm to sell a list of their financial supporters, making it likely that thousands of strangers moved by her plight will receive a steady stream of solicitations from anti-abortion and conservative groups.

"These compassionate pro-lifers donated toward Bob Schindler's legal battle to keep Terri's estranged husband from removing the feeding tube from Terri," says a description of the list on the Web site of the firm, Response Unlimited, which is asking $150 a month for 6,000 names and $500 a month for 4,000 e-mail addresses of people who responded last month to an e-mail plea from Ms. Schiavo's father. "These individuals are passionate about the way they value human life, adamantly oppose euthanasia and are pro-life in every sense of the word!"

Privacy experts said the sale of the list was legal and even predictable, if ghoulish. "I think it's amusing," said Robert Gellman, a privacy and information policy consultant. "I think it's absolutely classic America. Everything is for sale in America, every type of personal information."

Donations Needed!

Craigslist.org has this today: FOR SALE/BARTER: My body in Persistent Vegetative State...

If I am rendered comatose and determined to be in a persistent vegetative state (PVS) for a period longer than one month and if no imminent cure is forthcoming, I do not wish to be kept alive by artificial means including but not limited to nourishment, hydration, etc.

However....

If, due to the absurd political state of affairs in this country, my persistent vegetative state and impending unplugging can be parlayed into some sort of political leverage, I wholly endorse using my predicament in whatever way possible for the purposes of passing legislation favorable to my general political and ethical outlook. Here is a list of top-tier causes I support and will continue to support, both while in my PVS and after my eventual death.

* Debt Relief to Impoverished Nations: I will agree to stay in a PVS for an indeterminate amount of time if the United States aggressively pursues a policy of debt relief and debt forgiveness to developing and impoverished nations.

Business 2.0 Taunts Apple Legal With Product Speculation

Just in case you thought Sony and the PSP was going to rule the week, Business 2.0 magazine has five imaginary Apple products, as envisioned by Pentagram, the product design company that was founded by Bob Brunner, who designed the PowerBook. Business 2.0 apparently looked at recent Apple patent applications and job postings to come up with what they predict is the latest gear from the gang in Cupertino.

Images include:

  • WIRELESS iPOD,
  • vPOD (A digital image/iPod combo would feature a camera for still photos and video and would wirelessly sync with iPhoto, iMovie, and iTunes)
  • iHOME (Wi-Fi-based home network and media server would be the ultimate digital appliance, managing everything from music and photos to TV recording and office tasks)
  • iPHONE (A simplified wireless phone married to an iPod would feature Apple's signature scroll wheel for navigation and a slide-out keypad)
  • Everything You Need To Know About the PlayStation Portable

PSPWorld has a roundup of all the info about the PSP you need to know for tomorrow's launch.

"It's also Sony's answer to the Nintendo Game Boy and Apple iPod. The PSP has been called a "lifestyle device" because it not only plays games — it lets you enjoy music, movies and digital photos on a 4.3-inch wide screen TFT display."

    Life Culture

HOUSTON (Reuters) - President George W. Bush's intervention for Terri Schiavo has opened old wounds in Texas where death penalty opponents say his words of support for a "culture of life" ring hollow after so many executions during his time as governor of the state.

Bush said he stepped into the Schiavo case because the United States should have "a presumption in favour of life," but there were 152 executions in Texas during his administration, including some in which the convict's guilt was in doubt, critics said.

"It's hypocrisy at a thousand levels," said University of Houston law professor and death penalty defence attorney David
    Dow.

What TiVo Needs to Stay On the Air

Thomas Hawk's Digital Connection: TiVo Pauses Company Costs and Growth.

    In brief:

    1. Increased mobility and portability. Ramsay continued to promote the TiVoToGo technology. He also specifically reiterated today that TiVo is developing the ability to offload recorded television to Microsoft's Portable Media Center units.

    2. Deliver a TiVo branded experience on the PC. Wow. This is huge. Although there are over 3 million TiVo units out there right now (about a million with broadband connection) there are vastly, vastly more PCs out there. "This platform (PC) is playing an increasing role in the management of home entertainment and TiVo intends to offer applications and services that capitalize on the PCs unique power and network capabilities as well as it's enormous reach and scale of install base," said Ramsay.

    3. Continue to develop a broadband delivery platform. TiVo is right on here. They should continue to look at ways to push both popular programming and micro content over the network and on to their units.

An Open Letter to U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice

    By LLOYD AXWORTHY

    Dear Condi,

I'm glad you've decided to get over your fit of pique and venture north to visit your closest neighbour. It's a chance to learn a thing or two. Maybe more.

I know it seems improbable to your divinely guided master in the White House that mere mortals might disagree with participating in a missile-defence system that has failed in its last three tests, even though the tests themselves were carefully rigged to show results.

But, gosh, we folks above the 49th parallel are somewhat cautious types who can't quite see laying down billions of dollars in a three-dud poker game.

As our erstwhile Prairie-born and bred (and therefore prudent) finance minister pointed out in presenting his recent budget, we've had eight years of balanced or surplus financial accounts. If we're going to spend money, Mr. Goodale added, it will be on day-care and health programs, and even on more foreign aid and improved defence.

Sure, that doesn't match the gargantuan, multi-billion-dollar deficits that your government blithely runs up fighting a "liberation war" in Iraq, laying out more than half of all weapons expenditures in the world, and giving massive tax breaks to the top one per cent of your population while cutting food programs for poor children.

    Read all of it here.
    Harry Potter (the remix)

Wizard People, Dear Reader is an unauthorized re-envisioning of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, by Brad Neely. To experience it, viewers need to get a copy of the first Harry Potter movie (known as Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone in Europe) and watch it with the sound off, replacing Neely's narration with the original soundtrack.

It was not meant to be, however. Warner Brothers, which owns the copyrights on the Harry Potter movies, forced theaters to cancel screenings.

Not to say you can't find it on the 'net, tho.

    More Mac Rumors

    From MacOS Rumors:

  • iSight: An updated iSight camera/microphone is due to be released within 3-4 weeks. The revision is expected to include modified mounting hardware (possibly a 2nd interchangeable bracket for use when the standard one won't fit) and other changes to bundled accessories.
Major changes, like a new CCD camera unit, new microphones, USB 2.0 support, or a price drop are still unconfirmed.

  • "Asteroid" audio I/O device: Further confirmation of this rumor has come in the form of HexEdit scans of GarageBand 2.0, as reported by reader Andy Fenner who pulled this file:

    iLife '05 Install DVD/Individual Packages/Packages/GarageBandApp20.pkg/Contents/Archive.pax.gz

from the DVD and remove the GZip compression. If you open it with HexEdit you will find all kinds of allusions to Asteroid. Asteroid Max Volume, Asteroid Min Volume, Asteroid Slider, Select ASteroid Input and many, many others.

Add This to the Wish List

EvolutionTV - Digital Video Recorder for your Mac now tops the list of the things I shouldn't be spending money on (~US$280) but just might.

    Why:
  • MPEG-4 (able to directly moved to iMovie) and DivX hardware compression.
  • Comes with fully featured software enabling you to watch and record TV, schedule recordings, access online TV guides.

Thanks to its built-in video compression hardware, EvolutionTV will let you store hours of TV programs on a single DVD. Or load tons of movies to my PowerBook.

[For those who are looking for the other items there is no physical list (yet) but for the curious:

  • a G5 and/or Mac mini
  • iPod shuffle or iRiver 800 series
  • Say Goodbye To eMac?

AppleInsider is reporting that Apple appears to be phasing out eMacs at retail stores.

If this is to make room for a newew G5 eMac the end of a product line now that the Mac mini is here remains to be seen.

Either way it's a great time to score a new cheap Macintosh!

Do What We Say Not What We Do

If you listen to what comes out of the White House these days you would think they want everyone to be like we are. Well, that may be true but only up to a point you see.

An editorial in Today's San Jose Mercury News sums it up nicely.

In brief, at a recent United Nations meeting (attended by more than 100 countries) the goal was to document and advance the cause of gender equality as outlined in a platform adopted at the 1995 U.N. women's conference in Beijing, which the United States endorsed during the Clinton administration. Organizers had hoped to adopt a declaration before the opening session reaffirming the Beijing platform. However, as attendees soon found out that, the United States would not be signing any document supporting a woman's right to have an abortion.

Even though Roe vs. Wade ensures that right in the United States and the thrust of the U.N. platform isn't about abortion rights, but rather about ending discrimination against women in 12 different areas, ranging from health to education to employment. Ignoring that the U.N. strategy on reproductive health is resulting in reduced abortion rates around the world.

To quote the editors, "The president should stop pandering to abortion opponents and start putting U.S. funds toward helping the world's poorest and most-vulnerable women."

Google Alerts Mean Never Having To Wonder How News Turns Out

Read the local papers or watch the local news when on holiday? Hate when something happens but you leave the area before it gets resolved? Make a Google Alert and stay on top of all the developments as they happen without having to find out of town newspapers or their web-sites.

That's what I did when I got home from Edinburgh last July. I wanted to follow the tale of "former dustman Mark Hobson" who made quite a splash on the BBC and Sky News for 2 days.

Not the kind of story any local paper here is going to cover, much less for almost a year. (Especially when Michael Jackson is making headlines again.) Well, I got an email today with a link to the Times Online (Britain) that he has admitted to committing four killings that led to one of the biggest police manhunts in British history.
