Oscar seems to have an uncanny knack for predicting when nursing home patients are going to die, by curling up next to them during their final hours.

What If You Baked a Cake & Nobody Saw It?

[Harry Potter, Ace of Cakes, Duff Goldman]

Read while on holiday that Duff Goldman of TV's "Ace of Cakes" made a cake in the shape of Hogwarts but sadly nobody seems to have a picture of it, not even the Charm City Cakes homepage.

Hmpf.

Well, this cake is quite clever if you ask me so it will have to do.

Only These Were Made of Lego®...

Can't read a darn thing on this page other than 'wow!' but that about sums it up for me. An 'iPod' transformer!!"
The only thing that would make me more happy is if they would be made of Lego (and maybe also if they were free).

The Return of '3's A Crowd'

[, , , ]

"Bay Area grocery consumers, brace yourselves for a double-take.

Reviving a brand name that will stir memories - and perhaps restore the loyalty of consumers with a nostalgic bent - Save Mart is restoring the Lucky name next week to 72 Bay Area supermarkets it purchased from Albertsons.

Starting at midnight Sunday with a San Francisco supermarket, Save Mart will systematically shut down about eight Albertsons stores a week and conduct 48-hour makeovers - something like "Trading Spaces," only on a 50,000-square-foot magnitude.

Cosmetic changes will give stores a retro-Lucky decor. The chain will cut the majority of prices for its 45,000 to 50,000 items to reflect Lucky's boast of "everyday low prices." Workers will stock new product lines on the shelves and don Lucky uniforms. The chain will revive its "Three's a crowd" promise to open up checkout counters if lines back up."

Move Over A-10, Meet the MQ-9 'Reaper'

Unmanned aircraft crush worldwide enemies – from
Nevada

The first unmanned attack squadron in aviation history
will arrive in Iraq today looking to deliver 500-pound
bombs and Hellfire missiles to the enemy - all from
the comfort of a US Air Force base in Nevada.

The General Atomics MQ-9 Reaper can be controlled via
satellite link thousands of miles away from
operational areas. The planes are launched locally, in
this case Iraq and Afghanistan, but can be controlled
by a pilot and sensor operator sitting at computer
consoles in a ground station, or they can be "handed
off" via satellite signals to pilots and sensor
operators in Nevada's Creech Air Force Base or
elsewhere.

The MQ-9 Reaper is the Air Force's first hunter-killer
unmanned aircraft. It is the big brother to the highly
successful and sometimes controversial Predator
aircraft, which General Atomics said this week had
flown over 300,000 flight hours, with over 80% of that
time spent in combat.

The company said Predator series aircraft have flown
an average of 8,200 hours per month over the past six
months while maintaining the highest operational
readiness rates in the U.S. military aircraft
inventory. The MQ-9 Reaper is twice as fast as the
Predator - it has a 900-horsepower turbo-prop engine,
compared to the 119-horsepower Predator engine - and
can carry far more ordnance - 14 Hellfire missiles as
opposed to two.

At five tons gross weight, the Reaper is four times
heavier than the Predator. Its size - 36 feet long,
with a 66-foot wingspan - is comparable to the profile
of the Air Force's workhorse A-10 attack plane. It can
fly twice as fast and twice as high - 25,000ft
compared to 50,000ft - as the Predator.

According to the Air Force, the MQ-9 Reaper will
employ sensors to find, fix, track and target critical
emerging time sensitive targets. The Air Force is
developing the ability to operate multiple aircraft
from a single ground station, in effect, multiplying
the overall combat effectiveness over the battlefield.

General Atomics has built at least nine of the MQ-9s
at a cost of $69 million per set of four aircraft,
with ground equipment. The Air Force's 432nd Wing, a
UAV unit formally established May 1, is to eventually
fly 60 Reapers and 160 Predators. The numbers to be
assigned to Iraq and Afghanistan will be classified,
the Associated Press says.

Found: 17 pairs of socks, not all match.

Roger and Catherine Dellor's cats - Cleo and Tony - have been bringing them presents: someone else's socks.

"At first, it was just one or two," said Roger Dellor. "Now, they are arriving every day."

The Potter Spoilers Are Not in the Main Computer

LONDON:A £10 million security operation featuring an army of guards, satellite tracking systems and draconian legal contracts has swung into action to prevent any leak of details of the seventh and final book about the tales of boy wizard Harry Potter. As millions around the world eagerly await the release of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows on Saturday midnight, only its author J K Rowling and some 20 other people, including the book’s editors and illustrators know Harry’s fate.

Baa Baa Black Sheep Have You Any Wine

Why I will always have a soft-spot for my Alma Mater:

Trained Sheep Graze Vineyard Weeds

For centuries, farmers have used sheep to graze down unwanted vegetation but, unfortunately, the animals would also snack on crops. So the University of California Cooperative Extension is trying to teach the animals more useful eating habits.

"We have a project to train sheep to have an aversion to grape leaves," said Morgan Doran, Solano County livestock advisor and project leader. "If sheep avoid grapes, they can graze the floor of a vineyard, providing farmers an alternative to using herbicides and mowing."

Far Too Young and Clever

[, , ]

Back from beautiful (and WARM) Portland, Oregon for some time away from work, computers, etc. So as we were driving back from the coast, "Dexy's Midnight RunnersCome On Eileen" was on Charlie FM & we we singing away when the thought hit us, "what exactly are the lyrics?"

Well, 20-odd years later and thanks to the internet (in red are lines new to me):

Poor old Johnny Ray sounded sad upon the radio
He moved a million hearts in mono
Our mothers cried,
And sang along who'd blame them?

You've grown, so grown
Now I must say more than ever
(Come on Eileen) Toora Loora Toora Loo-Rye Aye
And we can sing just like our fathers

Come on Eileen, I swear (well he means)
At this moment, you mean everything
You in that dress, my thoughts I confess
Verge on dirty
Ah come on Eileen

These people round here, wear beaten down eyes
Sunk in smoke dried faces, so resigned to what their fate is
But not us, no not us, we are far too young and clever
(Remember) Toora Loora Toora Loo-Rye-Aye
Eileen I'll hum this tune forever

Come on Eileen, I swear, well he means
Ah come on let's, take off everything
Pretty red dress Eileen (Tell him yes)
Ah come on let's, ah come on Eileen
Pretty red dress Eileen (Tell him yes)
Ah come on let's, ah come on Eileen, please

Come on, Eileen taloo-rye-aye
Come on, Eileen taloo-rye-aye
(Now you have grown, now you have shown, oh, Eileen)
Said Come on, Eileen taloo-rye-aye (repeat in background)
You've grown...
So grown (Show, how you feel)
Now I must say more than ever
Things 'round here have changed
I said too-ra-loo-ra-too-ra-loo-rye-aye

Come on Eileen, I swear (well he means)
At this moment, you mean everything
You in that dress, my thoughts I confess
Verge on dirty
Ah come on Eileen

Come on Eileen, I swear (well he means)
At this moment, you mean everything
You in that dress, my thoughts I confess

Well, they're dirty

Ratatouille (film) & Ratatouille (recipe)

[Ratatouille, Pixar, film]

The Apple iPhone isn't the only 'project' involving Steve Jobs that has received considerable attention of late, "Ratatouille" from Pixar also arrived last week-end to great acclaim – and this one was quite the bargain (a mere $5 at Camera Cinema, San Jose).

In short: a very compelling story with many interesting characters and great animation, Paris at night has never looked so good! (Paris in the day? Richard Linklater 's "Before Sunset")

Need evidence of their attention to detail: Thomas Keller cooked a fancy layered version of the Proustian ratatouille called 'confit byaldi' and the recipe is available over at the New York Times .
