Used GPS, For Sale. Cheap...

Tip from Dan Gilmore: Google Announces Google Maps Navigation for Android 2.0

The next step for Google Maps is mobile: Google Maps Navigation (Beta) currently for Android 2.0 devices – comes with everything you'd expect to find in a GPS navigation system, like 3D views, turn-by-turn voice guidance and automatic rerouting. But unlike most navigation systems, Google Maps Navigation was built from the ground up to take advantage of your phone's Internet connection.

And it is free (except for the cost of the connection which I presume you are already paying for  – can you even get a smart-phone without a data plan? I haven't seen one yet.).

Looks like Verizon's 'Droid' is more and more the biggest storm in the iPhone's rear-view mirror.

The Unphotographed

For some reason, today I wanted to know what the slogan that (used
to?) appear on the cash registers at IKEA. "Tack something
something." (or was it Tåk?) I remember being impressed they could get
the circles over the letter(s), being in USA-centric America.

Well, after a whole bunch of Google, Google image searches, and a few
other sites just to be complete I came up dry.

Anyone have an idea? Or better yet a picture?

LA Tour Story

[]

As embarrassing as it is to admit it, I am as hooked on the new 90210 as I was on the original. I can't say much about the new Melrose Place as I never even knew they were making one and with our TiVO I rarely need to remember what day shows are on any more, I just expect them to show up and be available when I want to watch them. Failing that I just hit up HULU or YouTube and hunt for a show.

So, it was with more than a little thrill I stumbled upon this Beverly Hills 90210 Filming Location website. Everything you'd like to know about the Walsh family and the Wilsons, so no matter what version you are watching, or both, you are good to go.

Lowly Worm

Created and illustrated by Richard Scary- Lowly Worm can usually be found standing next to Huckle the Cat. Lowly's age and family status is unknown but if memory serves, he shares a bedroom with Huckle in the Cat family home.

Always dressed in a smart green alpine hat, with blue slack(s), a red bow-tie, and tennis shoe. Having one leg doesn't seem to slow this worm down- in fact some times he gets into more adventures than the rest of BusyTown's inhabitants. Who can forget when he found that doll inside a loaf of bread? Don't forget the time he tied himself in a knot to hold the door shut on a moon launch. Shades of Tom Hanks and the Apollo 13 movie!

In the last couple of years Lowly has branched out into several books with just him as the star, as well as gaining a voice on the Showtime network's children's specials.

Pop Up Lego® Temple Video

[]

Feast you eyes on the amazing pop-up Lego temple. Wish I could read more of the pre-roll, but how awesome is this. The box, and the contents are realistic and all made of Lego.

Can't say I have ever seen a pop-up book rendered in Lego.

look the part

I have heard time and time again that the well dressed and well groomed get better treatment. Frequent flyers know this – when there is an opening in First or Business class and two people up for the seat, more often than not the flight attendant will give the seat to the person, "who looks like they belong in First Class." It may be unfair but it is human nature. And just today I heard of the latest study that when it comes to first impressions, "ninety percent of HR professionals place more importance on being well-groomed" even over that of a firm handshake.

That is why Gillette, the razor company, created the Gillette Career Advantage website. They want to help you get a job and if you already have one, to help you rise above your competition in the job market. A job market that I don't think I have to tell you that would be an underestimate to call competitive. You can review the expert advice from Mark Jeffries and GQ style correspondent, Brett Fahlgren, plus take a Gillette Career Quiz or view the Hire Guide to see what HR professionals really think.

The Gillette Resource Center is the destination to discover all the Gillette products and review survey findings. You can also get invaluable advice from their staff of grooming and career experts.

So when you land that big interview, or even just a telephone pre-screen interview, looking like a professional will help you feel like a professional and that confidence is key. Check out the website and you'll see.

Nothing Like The Matrix, Really, Honest

Evan as cars get more and more complex, there still are a few things that the average user can do on their own. Doing it yourself can be fun and it is definitely a cheap way to do so.

Eek-a-Mouse, er, Rat

[]

The rat-turned-chef made famous in Ratatouille flirts, dances and entertains several times a week at the France pavilion at Les Chefs de France at Epcot. He travels table-to-table on a rolling food cart. Then a Maitre d’ lifts the lid off a silver-domed cheese platter to begin the show and the smallest Audio-Animatronics character ever created by Walt Disney Imagineering.

Not Very 'Apple'

In the wake of the SideKick cloud debacle I guess I should be happy with what I have but I was having the same question as this person over at the Apple Discussion board:

In the Mail App, when typing in an email address, it gives a list of suggestions. In the list, is, of course, my contacts, which I want to see. There are also other suggestions from emails I have sent in the past, and will not use again. (asking for a quote or something) These suggestions continue to pop up, as well as the contacts, co mingled. Is there a way to remove JUST the "other" emails?
Was looking forward to the helpful, simple Apple fix to this. Sadly there was but one answer:

They are in your Mail cache and the only way to remove them is to restore your phone and set it up as new phone (not from backup). Probably easier to just ignore them.

Don't think that this is particularly 'solved,' do you? Hive mind solution?

Michael Dell Hates These

[]

According to Michael Dell, a netbook is a dream purchase - until it's about 36 hours old.

"If you take a user who's used to a 14- or 15-inch notebook and you say 'Here's a 10-inch netbook,' they're gonna say 'Hey, this is so fantastic. It's so cute. It's so light. I love it,'" Dell told Silicon Valley's tech-obsessed Churchill Club during an appearance Tuesday night. "But about 36 hours later, they're saying 'The screen's gonna have to go. Give me my 15-inch screen back.'"

I wonder if he's just running the wrong OS on it. At $300 or so and OS X, I am thinking, "Hello new solid state computer!"

A World of Laughter

Back in the early 90s there was a Disney Store in downtown Boston – the windows were filled with animatronic characters, you were greeted at the door by a cast-member and there were things for sale thee you couldn't find anywhere else (say, an Uncle Scrooge wrist watch).

Slowly it seems the stores lost their fancy windows and the selection went from a mix of products aimed at all ages to cheap junk for kids.

Guess that's going to change as Disney says it will overhaul its mall stores and look to Apple and their stores for inspiration. The NY Times reports that it should be,
"an expensive and ambitious floor-to-ceiling reboot of its 340 stores in the United States and Europe — as well as opening new ones, including a potential flagship in Times Square."

Let me know when I can get that replacement Scrooge watch, would you, Steve?

who's going to save you

AssetIf you watch enough TV these days I think it is safe to say that after only a short while you will probably see way more than one commercial for car insurance, many with their carefully created and catchy cartoon(ish) spokes-models. But just how well do they work on the people watching? I know that in our family, we have had the same insurance company for many many years and until just now, haven't really thought of changing. But then I heard about PremiumAutoInsurance.net and the easy way they have created to sort through all the clutter and noise and let you get an all but instant quote.

After a few simple questions, like your ZIP code, the number of miles driven per year, and the years you have had your driver's license and almost before your eyes, out came an answer to just how much money we could be saving each and every month. Money that could really add up over a year or more!
It was also quite interesting to see that you can also fine-tune your plan to see how paying just a tiny bit additional can change the amount of coverage. If you think you might be paying to much for your insurance, you really owe it to yourself to visit PremiumAutoInsurance.net to get started on your Free Auto Insurance Quotes and see just how much they could help you start saving on auto insurance.

Safe In the Cloud? Think Again.

[]

T-Mobile has reportedly stopped selling all models of the Sidekick in the wake of an unprecedented hardware failure that took down many customers e-mail, contacts, as well as other data.

The company continues to investigate the problem which at this time seems limited to Microsoft products, specifically the Danger subsidiary that power the Sidekick service. Microsoft and T-Mobile posted an updated notice saying all data that was not currently on customers devices was likely lost permanently.

Foxconn building the fabled Apple tablet for Q1 2010 release?

Foxconn building the fabled Apple tablet for Q1 2010 release?

Digitimes is reporting that Taiwan-based Foxconn, a manufacturer that has worked with Apple on a number of projects in the past, has been tapped to build the rumored Apple tablet device for a release in the first quarter of 2010.

The initial production run of the tablet is expected to be 300,000 to 400,000 devices, and no estimated price for the device has been released.

The post notes that the focus of the device is to be an ebook reader with exceptional battery life, fast Internet connectivity, and an easy-to-use interface. This information is in line with recent reports that Apple has been approaching publishers about reproducing their content on the device.

This rumor reflects other recent reports that the tablet will have a 10.6" (some reports say 10.7") display, and there is speculation that the display would come from Foxconn's Innolux Display subsidiary. For the first time, the report notes that other manufacturers are not going to leave Apple any breathing room in this market, as HP and others are planning on releasing their own touchscreen tablets by the second quarter of 2010.

every drop counts

Having had a ceiling collapse after water collected on the roof, I have never been a fan of flat roofs. So you can imagine the horror when I saw over an inch of standing water above our kitchen last winter. Luckily, the roof held (this time) but what if the next time I was not so lucky?

If this sounds like something you have experienced or think you may in the future and if you are lucky enough to live in San Diego then you should remember the name Able Restoration.

Able Restoration is proud to be the largest provider of water damage services to San Diego residents since 1996. San Diego home is a wonderful place to call home but harsh hurricanes and tropical storms can threaten your roof and your home. Damage by water can also stem from high rising river waters, broken levees, flash flooding from severe rainstorms. That's just the natural causes, don't forget broken pipes or a clogged drainage systems that can lead to failure from the accumulation due to light rainfall.

Lots of things to remember, or just one thing: Able Restoration, the solution to water damage San Diego.
