80s Music News You Can Use

In 1990, Martha Wash (The Weather Girls- its raining men) was the female singer for a few of the hits from C+C Music Factory but wasn't credited and didn't show up on the cover or in the videos. She sued Columbia records and won, getting credits and royalties. Also, Beck has recorded a credible cover version of INXS's Kick.

We now return you to 2010.

“Made in Oregon” to Become “Portland Oregon”

Ramsay Signs is donating the “Made in Oregon” sign on top of the University of Oregon’s building in Old Town to the city, which will change the sign to “Portland Oregon.”

The maintenance of the sign, electricity and the costs of conversion to read “Portland Oregon” will be paid for with revenues from a city-owned parking lot under the Burnside Bridge, Portland City Commissioner Randy Leonard wrote in his blog.

The copy change proposal will have to be reviewed by the Historic Landmarks Commission if the conversion is to begin later this summer, he added.

Disney (pins) Goes Steam Punk

The collection contains five limited edition pins that will be sold individually. There is also a journal written by Professor Ludwig Von Drake that introduces the Mechanical Kingdom story. The journal literally looks like a book complete with a cover and several pages. The final page contains all five individual pins and two "completer pins" – Mickey Mouse and Pirate Pete.

...thankfully they left Uncle $crooge out of this.

An anonymously-sourced, unconfirmed memo partially quoted on Slashdot purports to show that Palm is ready to ditch the failing WebOS - which powers its Pre smartphone - and instead become yet another Android handset maker.

Not sure how I feel about this, their phones are gorgeous, but have never tried tk use the WebOS.

Amazon, I Think You Just Shot Yourself in the Foot

Was all set to pull the trigger on what I was browsing this afternoon when I got this message:

Please note that the price of Vulli Sophie the Giraffe Teether, Brown/ White has increased from $14.95 to $15.89 since you placed it in your Shopping Cart. Items in your cart will always reflect the most recent price displayed on their product detail pages.

Um, yeah. I know it is less than a dollar* but a CAB has his principles to maintain, doesn't he. And so I will wait.

*94¢, to be precise.

UPDATE: at 9:02pm: ...the price ... has decreased from $15.89 to $15.51 since you placed it in your Shopping Cart.

Lego FunFact

Crabby Commute

913 Belmont right on time, as was I after an invigorating walk through
downtown. No thanks to the VTA light-rail that didn't open their doors
- maybe they thought it was such a nice morning we'd like to ride on

free flash fun

Unless you are on an iPhone, iPod touch or an iPad (and if you are, how did you get one already, they are not for sale yet!) there is tons of fun to had playing flash-based game over at poptropica.

If you are like me and don't have either the time, the money or the need to add another box to your TV, why not use the computer you already to own to play games? As an added bonus, the games are free so if you don't like them all you are out is a short download time and a few moments of your own time.

With all the games they have on offer and neatly arranged by type, there is sure to be something to catch your eye and wear out your thumbs this evening. Why not give it a try and see what entertainment awaits!

Caribou Coffee Has a New Look

Caribou Coffee Leaps into the Future via Brand New

Starbucks may be the number one coffee chain but did you know number two was Caribou Coffee, – with nearly 500 locations in 16 U.S. states (compare that to the 11,000+ of Starbucks). Originally established in Minneapolis in 1992, Caribou was the go-to place in Chicago (and the one time we visited Atlanta).

"Because coffee is the heart and soul of our company, the body of the caribou is formed out of a coffee bean. In addition, the caribou's antlers now form the shape of the letter 'C'."
[...]
"The shield element has been updated to resemble the shape of traditional national park signage. This is a nod to our founders' hike in Alaska's Denali National Park, where they were inspired to start the company," said Alfredo Martel, senior vice president of marketing for Caribou Coffee.

Nerd Status: Unlocked

"IT Crowd" theme music is my new ring-tone. I will draw the line at having any Moss soundbites, however.

Still not going to delete "Keyboard Cat" from the phone, however.

Sink Below the Water

Was wondering why I hadn't got a 'reminder' to re-license the music I had 'checked out' from SpiralFrog, well according to C|Net's blog post "Requiem for a frog: SpiralFrog shuts down" it would be because, "[t]he pioneering ad-supported music service--once considered a possible threat to iTunes--quietly ceased operations Thursday [March 19, 2009]. "

Can't be a good sign or comment on your business model if your website goes dark for a year & I never notice....

Lunch Time Doubly So

Daylight savings time starts March 14th. I am thinking I could make up that lost hour by having someone prepare my breakfast for me! (Is that wrong?)

Who has a Sunday Brunch buffet menu that won't kill me of drive me to the poor house? Last few places we used to go to have all shut down....

see the day

Being able to see clearly is becoming one of our most important senses, now that more and more of our daily lives are being lived out online. YouTube recently made great strides in opening up their collection of videos to the deaf and hard of hearing community by adding closed captions to all their collection of clips. Now, most of the clips are getting machine based captioning which can be laughably wrong some times but for the most part, anything is better than nothing.

Unfortunately, as we spend more time staring at a computer screen each day the very thing that lets us do so tends to be the most easily damaged which is why it is important to have regular eye exams and proper eyeglasses should the need arise.

Now, I can't really help you save on the exam part, but when it comes to getting the glasses you need at a price you'd like, well then, you have come to the right place. Zenni Optical is a company I have mentioned before. They pride themselves on using the latest modern materials, manufacturing and marketing systems to bring you a pair of glasses direct from their factories to you. Without the middlemen, retail overhead, and a minimal advertising budget, you can get fashionable and stylish frames and lenses and get back to enjoying all that modern life has to offer.

But don't just take my word for it, ask any of their many satisfied customer and read the SF Examiner review . Seeing well should be a right not a privilege. Saving money doing so can be just as easy, because now it is possible to get quality eyeglasses for a low cost!

Postcards to Benefit War Orphans

166 postcards are currently being auctioned at eBay to benefit Sierra Leone war orphans. Done in conjunction with the documentary BROWNSTONES TO RED DIRT, each artist was given a blank birchwood postcard and asked to create a unique work with the theme, “PEN PALS.” All proceeds will be used to help build a school for war orphans in Freetown, Sierra Leone as well as to develop a library for at-risk youth in Brooklyn.

See what some of the top names in animation, children’s book illustrators, graphic novel/comic artists, and personal favourite, Sesame Street puppeteer Caroll (Oscar the Grouch) Spinney have created for the cause at eBay.
