Croeso i Gymru

To quote the Welsh entertainer Harry Secombe, "They say 'sorry' is the hardest word but they're wrong. It's that Welsh name of a railway station."

I've driven in Wales and would have to agree with him on principle.

how does your garden grow

This is a Sponsored Post written by me on behalf of SaferBrand. All opinions are 100% mine.

As I slowly (and long time followers will know that I do mean slow) get the back-yard back in shape the question of what to plant and how to manage it needed to be readdressed now that we have a baby in the house. If it would ever stop raining here in California we plan on spending lots of time outside in the fresh air and the green plants. What I don't want on the lawn, plants and veggies is anything toxic so when I heard about EndALL insect spray the first OMRI listed® product that can effectively kill even the eggs of insects on contact (it actually works on any stage of life from egg to adult and on 45 different insects including aphids, Japanese beetles, caterpillars and including gypsy moth caterpillars).

Being in the yard with a toddler is a balance, I want her to get exposed to nature, to learn to enjoy the garden and not be bothered with pests. On the other hand, I don't want the yard to be so pest free as a result of making it a toxic waste dump. Besides, I have nothing against bugs in general, I just prefer them to be somewhere else than where we are.

We have already decided to discontinue the toxic ant spray and rely on organic means which so far seem to be working, I just want to be prepared for whatever and whoever we'll meet this summer! Which is why I am checking out EndALL from Safer Brand and suggest you do the same. Enjoy your yard and know it's safe to enjoy.

Oh, Sarah Jane

According to wikipedia:  a fourth series of Sarah Jane Adventures has been commissioned by the BBC, it began filming in March 2010 scheduled to air in the Fall. The series will once again consist of 12 x 25 minute episodes with all the six main characters (Sarah Jane Smith, Luke, Clyde, Rani, Mr Smith and K-9) set to return.

The BBC also confirmed that the newest Doctor, Matt Smith will guest star in one of the two-part stories, along with Katy Manning, who will be reprising her role as the Third Doctor's companion Jo Grant. That story will be written by former Doctor Who showrunner Russell T Davies, and will be the first (only?) time he will write for the new Doctor.

Now, when can we see 'series' 3 in the US? BBCamerica, why have you forsaken us!

Android Flash Fun – HULU edition

Looks like it was fun while it lasted but for a moment there, Hulu was up and running on Nexus 1 phones with the FroYo update.
Seems all you had to do was make the browser tell websites you were on a desktop system.

type:"about:debug" into the URL bar,
select UAString (which allows you to change the user agent, or the identifying network protocol of your browser),
select "Desktop."

HULU has plugged the leak but it does go to show the power of an open system versus a closed one, doesn't it?

make yourself at home

No matter how far you travel in life, you always return home so why not make it the most comfortable and beautiful place it can be. So unless you have unlimited funds, which I will assume you don't as why else would you be here, the question is where best to spend your cash. When you stop to think about where you spend the bulk of your time it usually boils down to just two locations: the yard and the bath. Since currently the state of my yard precludes me from offering advice right about now let's just focus on the bath today, shall we?

Chances are your sinks and tub are still serviceable so the biggest bang for the buck would come from changing out your vanities. But where to get your new bath vanity? You could shop at your local home improvement center but have you thought about shopping online? The selection may surprise and the prices certainly will give you pause. Save money and make your bathroom a place of peace and tranquillity.

pearly white

Back from the dentist and let me tell you how hard it is to drink hot coffee when you have been numbed in the process of having two fillings replaced. They needed to come out and I don't begrudge the procedure which actually was quite painless, all in all. The best part– what once was an unsightly mess of grey and or silver in my back teeth are now a much more appealing white. You really can't see what a lifetime of sugary treats, bad brushing and flossing habits and a lack of fluoridated water has wrecked.

I bring it up because we now have the technology to improve the teeth you have without it all being so obvious. Nice when it comes to filling cavities, almost a requirement I would think when it comes to teeth straitening. No more mouth full of metal thanks to the magic of invisalign. Can't say if I would have appreciated this more as an easily embarrassed tween or if I had to have braces now as an adult.

I have known two people now who decided as adults to have their bite corrected and I must say, having a silver grin is terribly obvious on an adult. Can definitely see why you would opt to making it the first thing people look at when they see you! This has been a sponsored post.

the phone lines are now open

I think it's rather funny yet sad that as more and more people are ditching their dial-up internet connections as fast as they are getting rid of their land line phone connection. Of course, it helps to be living alone to do the mobile number only thing, not entirely sure how we would do it as quite often those trying to reach us are trying to reach any or all of us and in that case it helps to have a single number tied to a geographical location.

The good news for the people that previously were told they live to far from the rest of their neighbors to get DSL or cable internet and were more or less stuck with a dial-up connection can now get their internet speed fix from space. Thanks to satelite high speed internet, they can watch the latest streaming videos the rest of the country is watching and download mp3s at a rate just like the rest of us. No more limiting your high speed surfing to your lunch-hours thanks to cheap internet from above!

Cheap Tweets

If you follow the twist and turns of Twitter, you have probably heard that the iPhone / iPod Touch app Tweetie was acquired by Twitter (the company. Well it's been updated and (re)released as Twitter for iPhone. The good news is it's now free while Tweetie was US$2.99. If you are in the US, look for it in the App Store as early as tonight.

Mortgage rates are see-sawing back and forth, home rates are doing the same depending on where you live and if you are like me and have a home mortgage that isn't set to a fixed rate for the foreseeable future you may be quite confused about what to do. Heck, if you are like me you are probably not even aware of all the things you could do! Yes, refinancing is the obvious first option but do you know about loan modification?

Well, thanks to the American Residential Law Group, there is a wiki page that should help educate you about all of your options when it comes to home loan modification. See what you can do to keep your home, to lower your monthly payments or just make sure you already have the best possible rate and situation for your unique circumstances. Nobody is going to knock on you door to help save you money and if they do, be suspicious. Educate yourself and then act, the money or home you save will be your own.

NPR has a slide show of the volcano that changed more than just the local residents lives and ToughPigs.com has several artists, including current Muppet comics artist Roger Langridge to create pieces celebrating the man who gave us Kermit the Frog and countless other friends with their collection: Remember Jim: 20 Years Later.

the law isn't like tv

When you or someone close to you has been paid a visit by the local police department and arrested you need to do understand that the real world isn't like a TV show where the good and innocent always triumph over the bad, the corrupt or the misguided – you will a good legal team. The law and your freedom is no laughing matter and the better your representation is and the sooner you get it, the better your expected outcome should be.

If you find yourself looking for something from the Criminal Defense Attorney Los Angeles department, you are lucky to have a lot of choices, some of course better than others– so how do you choose?

Find someone to walk you through all the steps, from arrest to bail to trial. The court system isn't like what your TV has taught you. So if you find yourself in trouble get the help you need at a price you can afford and get the outcome you should.

Facebook Settings

Good quote and an example of how people share things without meaning to.
People think “everyone” includes everyone who searches for them on Facebook. They never imagine that “everyone” includes every third party sucking up data for goddess only knows what purpose.
Read how one teenager felt when she had it spelled out to her how she was sharing information with her mother despite pointedly meaning not to.

savings in a click

I have been bitten by the SLR digital photography bug now that prices have come down to the low to mid 500s. Those of you who know me, or are faithful readers here know that doesn't mean I immediately leaped at the first camera I saw. Rather, I carefully considered all the options, the big 3 majour manufacturers (Nikon, Canon and Pentax), and if I wanted a smaller point and shoot with interchangeable lenses instead. I more or less have narrowed it down to a single model but because sometimes I think the Universe likes to play with my mind, the camera in question comes in four different colours, all of which seem to be priced just slightly differently.

Of course, having picked out a camera means now I can start looking at my various vendor options and how price and any available coupons might come into the pricing game. I have been watching the Newegg shipping coupon scene as well as a few others, hopefully by this summer there will finally be closure on this topic and I can start obsessing over the next bit of high tech kit I 'need'. Did someone say combo iPod HD-Radio base station?

As of now, 298 poliomyelitis cases have been registered in Tajikistan, of which 15 were already lethal.

a stylish home

Just how some faces look better with glasses (a conceit I know and not just because I wear glasses), some homes just look better with shutters. Some parts of the country shutters are a real necessity and in others they are more of a personal choice when it come to external decoration, but regardless if your house needs them or you just want them, doesn't it make sure to get the best ones you can get for the right price?

My aunt added shutter to their exterior windows after long and careful consideration and while she probably will never experience the extreme weather that precludes protection of your window glass, the addition of vinyl shutters really enhanced the look and made the exterior look, in a word, "finished."

Which all in all is a good thing, especially given how long it took her to find the right style and just the right shade of blue. She's happy and I'm happy too, knowing she's happy and she didn't over pay for them.

rolling on the turf

The weather is turning warming here is California and that means it is time for some much delayed outdoor activities this weekend. I don't think I will be able to get to the shore just yet which means the plan for surfing lessons is still on hold – probably just as well as I bet the surf is still a tad to cold for extended lesson time but that doesn't mean I can't get in some bike riding or some skateboarding to keep in shape, get some fresh air and stay in form for when I can get away for surf school

I started to skate in the 70s but unlike the Southern California types, we didn't have as many empty swimming pools to skate in. We were more of a downhill or the corridors of the elementary school type of skaters. No film of us skating either, somehow we never thought of recording those moments, probably because were just goofing around, not looking to be YouTube stars with endorsement deals to keep us in decks and shoes.

Were we too dumb to chase a deal or smarter because we were doing it for the love of it. Hard to say....

shop far wide and wise

The best part about online shopping from home is that you can do it in your pajamas. The second best part is that you are not limited to just one shop or even just the usual popular shops. With a bit of searching you can often find the same things you'd buy from the big-name websites for a fraction of the price.

Don't be fooled that the internet names have the best prices, often times they don't and are simply counting on force of habit to keep you coming to their website. You may end up paying for the discount you got on that book by over-paying for your iPod dock.

So the next time you are looking to fix up your dorm room or patio with a new Mini fridge or need something new to wear, take some time out to look at all your online options. A smaller name website can often pass along the savings they make by not having to advertise all the time to you. If it's the same item made by the same big-name maker, what have you got to lose and how much do you think you can save? A little looking whilst having your breakfast can mean finding a big savings opportunity.

drive on driver

The first time I ever drove in the UK would have been memorable for the sights and sounds we experienced but something happened within the first five minutes that I will never forget. We picked up the car from a rental agency in downtown Edinburgh and made a few right turns to get to our hotel. Problem was, that took a left turn and I hadn't really thought of how a US driver should handle that. The light turned green and off I went, shifting from first to second – and right into the oncoming traffic. I can cut the corner too closely was looking at the front end of some rather large cars and some very surprised (and large) drivers! With the help of my able navigator in the front seat I was able to correct my mistake but not before a hale of car horns.

As a rental customer I didn't have to worry about Motor Trade Insurance but if I was a local I would have been glad I was covered, despite nothing happening that time. Knowing help after an accident or incident was a quick freephone number away would let me focus on having fun while driving knowing I was safe.

Robots Try Harder

Latest sales number show the Android OS has knocked Apple out of the number 2 slot and slid just behind Blackberry/RIM. Market Researcher NPD says first quarter sales give RIM 36% of OS sales, Android 28% and Apple 'just' 21%.

Makes sense if for no other reason than: we have all seen the prototype New iPhone by now, the talk of iPhone OS4 points out that anything but a 3G is going to be crippled and Blackberry and gPhones are on every network, not just AT&T.

Plus, have you seen the specs on the new HTC Incredible? Better camera, better screen and more storage than the 3G iPhone, what's not to love? Oh, right, the 200,000 apps that people feel like they need to have access to.

make the party seen

When you have a party you want everything to be perfect, from the invitations to the music list to the food, but it is the decorations that can turn a party from a "beer at my place and watch the hockey game" to a full fledged "for you know this is a luxury sky box" sort of event that even Lord Stanley himself would be in awe of.

Think of the fancy Hollywood parties you see featured in magazines, more often than not it's the same menu as the last party with the same guests by why did one party make the papers and another might as well have not happened? I am going to say it was the setting of the scene.

Start the look of your next party before your guests even arrive at your door– unique invitations, and do up your front yard with a tableau or some custom yard signs. After all, a High School gymnasium looks like every other but dress it up right and you have anything from a Night in Old Vienna to Enchantment Under the Sea. It all depends on the scene you set in this case illusion is almost everything.

if you want to travel

If you live in California you know that having a car is almost a requirement - thanks to our open plan cities and a historical underfunding of public transport you have a perfect storm. Of course when everyone has a car the issue then becomes traffic and more importantly– parking. I usually don't count on finding a free parking place but with some careful work ahead of time you can usually find cheaper places as opposed to the more pricey places.

Airport parking provides an even further wrinkle to the parking dilemma, usually airports are large enough to prevent parking for free and walking to your destination, although a dedicated cheapskate may keep that as one of their options. So if you do need to find parking at the larger California airports, say sfo or parking at lax you can do some quick internet research and save some money, save your feet and still get to and from your flight in record time.

Invest some time up front and you'll have money left to spend on holiday or invest for funding your next holiday!

Android Now Running On iPhone 3G says PCWorld

Want to try Android but only have a 3G iPhone? A team has now brought Android to the iPhone 3G. Slightly more rough than the previous Android on first-generation iPhone port, this marks an important milestone for the more DIY-minded owners of the millions of iPhone 3G devices that are out there says PCWorld.

Anyone know if there's an iPhone that runs under Android?

modern living

The furniture and accent pieces in a well decorated home home can as often be driven as much by the owner's taste as by the style of a house. Just as a business man dresses the part with a 3 piece suit and a designer watch, if you have a formal or semi-formal living room, the type of art and clocks you should reflect that sensibility.

We looked at many homes before we bought the one we have and passed on several as their modern style really called for a spare and high-tech look, Eichlers and Danish Modern furniture just seem to naturally go together. For our mission furniture, heavy china hutch and grandfather clock, we needed and got an older home with oak floors and leaded glass double-hung windows. With everything coordinated with each other, I really think the house, even though we have really only lived here for a relatively short time, really feels like a home. I think the people that have all come to visit (the originally two but now three of) us have said the same thing. Everything belongs, including the newest occupants.

active lifestyle act

And here I thought I was busy this week with the meeting deadline for abstracts being tonight, well, tomorrow really but always best to submit twenty four hours before, just to be on the safe side. The bummer about all this work is that it is really cutting into my exercise and weight loss plan two ways: one I am not getting the time I need to exercise and two I am not eating as well as I should. Too many late night pizza deliveries and eating the junk food that seems to accumulate in our break-room.

To make matters worse I asked a my friend what they were doing to stay fit and this was their week's plan: Today, slipping out of work early. Getting a hair cut and them off to make some granola bars and pack my bags. On Friday the gang is meeting at my house at 8am for the eight hour drive to the Grand Canyon for the race. Then Sunday the plan is to drive back to San Diego and by Monday back to work as if nothing really happened.

I hate to be petty and I know it's not a competition, but I would have thought between the two of us I would have bet that I would have been the one to lose the weight we talked about before they did. I guess in all honestly I thought they were not going to be able to stick to the regimen they had established for themselves. Maybe I should use more protein drinks weight loss as an alternative to eating the junk food they have here. What are friends for, if not to help motivate you to exercise, eat right and by all means: stop eating the weekly donuts people bring here at work.

vision quest

Interesting article on eye glasses in the recent copy of The New Yorker I am currently reading –they covered a bit of the history of them (did you know that Roman Emperors used to hold gems to their eyes to filter the sun and used globes of water to magnify small details?), and that most of the frames in the shops are made by increasingly smaller and smaller numbers of companies? That could explain why even as the technology improves the cost remains the same or even edging upward.

The good news for the cheap and frugal like me is that the article all but said you don't have to pay that much for a quality set of
lens and frames if you eliminate the expensive stores and designer names.

I have been noticing more and more I have to look over the top of my glasses to read small print. I just am not ready to start looking at Lasik so off to the eye doctor I keep going. Just glad to hear there are alternatives to high price mall locations.

safe and sane

Today's car can do so much more than just transport you from point a to point b. They are air-conditioned, satellite radio music halls with Dolby surround and full T1 level internet access ready and willing to take your calls via bluetooth headset. Problem is the roads have gotten more crowded while the distractions have adding up, so have the number of drivers on the road. Safety has improved with antilock brakes and more and more airbags but accidents are still happening.

Not long ago my nephew rolled his truck. He was trapped inside for over 2 hours while emergency responders worked to get him out. They called for a helicopter for a medivac flight but they ended up using an ambulance to transport him town. He's looking a long road of physical therapy and rehab. Not sure what this will do to his insurance bill but had he been living in Florida I am guessing he could use some cheap florida auto insurance right about now. I bet he could use a new truck right about now as well.

Drive safe, drive smart and drive insured because no matter how safe and smart you are, there are lots of other drivers out there, not all of them as safe and smart like I know you are.

father son and email host

With the drop in cost of storage and bandwidth these days finding a host for a web site is easy and quite cheap but is that really the first and last thing you should base your decision on? I am guessing you want (and need and deserve) the most for your money? My father never had a web-based business but he did teach me to be careful with a dollar and get to know the people you do business with.

Good hosting companies provide world-class 24-hour support and can answer your questions when you have them, not promise to get back to you at their convenience. What good is it if they just take your money and don't perform like you were promised, or worse say your email hosting service gets you associated with spammers? Will BP Own Their Mess

LATimes has a sobering and sad look at the 'spill' caused by BP off the coast of Louisiana:

the problem with the April 20 spill is that it isn't really a spill: It‘s a gush, like an underwater oil volcano. A hot column of oil and gas is spurting into freezing, black waters nearly a mile down, where the pressure nears a ton per inch, impossible for divers to endure. Experts call it a continuous, round-the-clock calamity, unlike a leaking tanker, which might empty in hours or days.

I think it's time to start to move the whole country 'Beyond Petroleum,' don't you think?

Eet

From the latest 90210, Regina Spektor's 'Eet.' Fits rather well with 'the gang' taking the SATs, don't you think?

Also: I think Regina Spektor is the 2010 equivalent of Mila Jovovich, music-wise, anyway.

sex crime 90210

Watching 90210, the next generation and they have finally brought an end to the Naomi accusing her teacher of improper behaviour when she confesses and then makes a public spectacle in his defense when she hears others in the school start to believe her false accusations and label her teacher a 'pervert.'

In the real world I am afraid that things would never work out so easily for all involved. Which is why the world needs sex crime defense attorneys who can specialize in helping the accused. You don't have to be a rocket scientist to know that even those who don't work for a school, an unfounded accusation or arrest can permanently impact a person’s life regardless if there is no corroborating evidence, no physical evidence, and no independent witnesses. If the person accused doesn't get an experienced defense lawyer, one who can immediately begin building a defense to the charges, who knows what can happen. You have so much to lose and so much to protect, don't you think?
