fragmentary culture

The recent passing of Michael Jackson ("The King of Pop") and Walter Cronkite ("The Most Trusted Man in America") have made it clear that the monoculture we used to live in, even as recent as the 1980s, has disappeared – replaced with a fragmented niche experience where it seems just about every person has a different favourite musical artist and place to get their news. About the closest thing to a unifying element these days is Harry Potter and I am not too sure that even that will be for very much longer now that all the books in the series have been written and there are but two movies left to go see.

One of the main reasons for this splintering of of collective attention would have to be the rise of the modern high speed internet, allowing anyone anywhere to watch and read exactly what they are looking for with a mere touch of a few keys. There is finally enough broadband saturation in the United States to say say that digital tools we have are changing the way we live our lives each day, how we interact with our families and friends (both real and virtual), and how we learn and entertain ourselves.
