wave of patriotism

The other day a local radio station was playing music from 1979 and interspersed were some news reports of the era featuring (then) President Carter as well as the departure of the Shah of Iran and the subsequent occupation of the American embassy. I recognized a few of the songs – I would have been a 'tween' if such things existed then and wasn't yet a big music listener. Oddly I vaguely remember some of the history but doubt I really fully understood the whole scope of the events until much later.

In hindsight, Carter is turning out to not as bad as we all were led to believe and it seems to me the Reagan mystique is fading a bit as time goes by. Of course now were are seeing Obama being both praised as our last best hope and labeled a socialist who is selling our country out to the Saudis.

It is too bad that we can't all just pull together as Americans and get the country back on a track toward profitability and stabilize the environment but I guess there will always be those who like the status quo and will seek to maintain it, regardless of how detrimental it may be in the long term.

Which reminds me that every time I put up and take down the outdoor Christmas lights I see our empty flag pole and think that I should be shopping for American flags before Flag Day, the Fourth of July and basically the summer returns.

Always feels good to live in American, just feels better lately.
