In the latest issue of Sierra Magazine there was a story about an Electrical Engineer who took back the darkness for four days by hooking his Prius to an inverter (changing the direct current from the car's battery to the alternating current needed for the lights and appliances).

They did point out that unless you have a degree in Electrical Engineering it might be a better idea to go with the more traditional Electric Generator to cover your emergency power needs.
