Take 2 Tablets: Amazon Adds Apps

WIRED

offers the biggest hint so far that the putative iSlate is a colour-powered Kindle killer.

##Amazon opens up the Kindle to third party developers, allowing applications, or what Amazon calls "active content", to run on the device. What kind? Interactive books, travel guides with locations data, RSS readers and anything that brings text to the device would be good candidates — even magazine and newspaper subscriptions.##

As has been pointed out before, Apple didn't invent the mp3 player, it made it friendlier and better. Heaven knows there's a great deal of improvement that can be made on the Kindle, hence the B&N nook and all the other readers at CES.

Disclosure: I have the iPod kindle app installed and find it to be fairly decent based on the one free Sherlock Holmes book I have been reading on it.
