Just a quick peek at a picture I starred on Flicker: Vintage 66 Motel, Neon Road Sign, 1946-Era, Route 66, Needles, CA

Location: 66 Motel 91 Desnok Street (corner of Desnok and Broadway, aka historic Route 66) Needles, California While we were there, the motel's iconic neon road sign wasn't working. However, Route 66 News has a photo of the sign lit and a short 2012 article about the problems experienced making the old sign making operational. The signage on the building's roof doesn't have neon tubing anymore, only holes where it used to be. About the motel, via Wikipedia: 66 Motel, an independently owned six-room motel established 1946-47 in Needles, formerly served travellers on U.S. Route 66 in California. Bypassed c. 1970 by Interstate 40, the motel has been used as single room occupancy apartments since the 1990s.   [...]   Small independent Route 66 lodgings, on the town's now-bypassed main street but a mile or more from the nearest freeway exit, would be forced to compete with national chains building newer, larger properties directly adjacent to the I-40 off-ramps.   "This has been a dead place for a long time, This motel has a lot of potential, but what it boils down to is that Mama-and-Papa businesses in this country are dead, dead, dead. You need big business to do anything. All I want to do is get out of here." — Marjud Paakkanen, 66 Motel's owner, in 1997   As the small, independent motels relied on the visibility which came with a location on the main road of their era, business declined. By the 1990s, the 66 Motel was no longer taking overnight travellers and its much-photographed neon signage was deteriorating and no longer functional. The motel survived through monthly rentals as single room occupancy; the original Carty's Camp is still standing but in ruins. Info about Needles, via Wikipedia: Needles (Mojave: ʼAha Kuloh) is a city in San Bernardino County, California, United States. It lies on the western banks of the Colorado River in the Mohave Valley subregion of the Mojave Desert, near the borders of Arizona and Nevada and roughly 110 miles (180 km) from the Las Vegas Strip. It is also the easternmost city of the Greater Los Angeles area. The city is accessible via Interstate 40 and U.S. Route 95. The population was 4,844 at the 2010 census, up from 4,830 at the 2000 census.   Needles was named after "The Needles," a group of pinnacles, mountain peaks in the Mohave Mountains on the Arizona side of the river to the south of the city. The large Mohave Native American community shares the nearby Fort Mojave Indian Reservation and the town. Needles is a gateway to the Mojave National Preserve.   [...]   Needles was a major stop on the historic U.S. Route 66 highway from the 1920s through the 1960s. For immigrants from the Midwest Dust Bowl in the 1930s, it was the first town that marked their arrival in California. The city is lined with motels and other shops from that era. The "Carty's Camp" which appears briefly in "The Grapes of Wrath" as the Joad family enters California from Arizona is now a ghost tourist court, its remains are located behind the 1946-era 66 Motel. ********** Route 66 road trip with my husband to celebrate our 31st anniversary, from Two Guns, Arizona to Needles, California, Feb-Mar 2017.
