Bah Hummer -Indie rockers reject big money from the king of gas guzzlers

[MPG]

The Thermals, a rambunctious rock band from Portland, Ore., were en route between gigs last year when they got a phone call from their label, Sub Pop. Hummer wanted to pay them $50,000 for the right to use their song "It's Trivia" in a commercial.

"We thought about it for about 15 seconds, maybe," lead singer Hutch Harris said.

They said no.

Washington D.C.'s Trans Am were offered $180,000 by Hummer for the song "Total Information Awareness."

"We figured it was almost like giving music to the Army, or Exxon," guitarist Philip Manley said.

They said no.

The post-punk band LiLiPUT, who broke up more than 20 years ago, could have pocketed $50,000 for "Heidi's Head" after making close to nothing during their five-year existence. But they, too, said no.

"At least I can sleep without nightmares," Marlene Marder reasoned.

So It's Come to This

[South Dakota, abortion]

Here's one response to the South Dakota Senate passing an abortion
ban bill: a woman named Molly has posted an abortion manual for the
women of South Dakota. Think of it as an update to the Jane
organization who in Chicago in the '60s and early '70s, when
abortions were illegal in many places and expensive to get, provided
solutions for women who had little or no help.

"...I know, women of South Dakota, that you never asked for this, now
is the time to learn how it is done. There is no reason you should be
beholden to doctors -- especially in a state where doctors have been
refusing to perform them..."

Sunny February

[ice cream, winter]

Now that 'winter' is over (for us California-types) it's time to start(?) thinking of ice-cream. No sooner though then in come an email from Ben & Jerry's announcing their new flavours. Interesting ones (either by name or by taste) include:

•Black & Tan™ - Cream stout ice cream swirled with chocolate ice cream
•Neapolitan Dynamite™ - Cherry Garcia® and Chocolate Fudge Brownie ice creams, side by side
•Vermonty Python™ - Coffee liqueur ice cream with a chocolate cookie crumb swirl & fudge cows

Score One For the IT Department

[film, brokeback, meme]

Brokemac Mountain is a very short parody of the critically acclaimed Ang Lee film Brokeback Mountain involving two men and a Mac. Think of it as the Reader's Digest version of the film, but then again I haven't seen it so what do I know?

Maybe it's the Reader's Digest version of the part(s) that have the red-staters in such a twist.

Either way - Kevin Donovan will likely hate this.

Branwen, Hugine, Munin, Gwyllum, Thor & Baldrick

[Bird-flu, H5N1, London]

From BBCnews:

Tower's ravens are kept indoors

The raven master said they do not like to keep the birds inside The
Tower of London has decided to keep its famous ravens indoors to
protect them from bird flu.

Special aviaries have been created for the six birds within one of
the towers of the fortress on the Thames as legend has it the Tower
of London will collapse and the kingdom will fall if all the ravens
leave.

The Tower ravens - named Branwen, Hugine, Munin, Gwyllum, Thor and
Baldrick - are said to be getting used to their new surroundings. The
Tower's Yeoman raven master, Derrick Coyle, said: "Although we don't
like having to bring the Tower ravens inside, we believe it is the
safest thing to do for their own protection, given the speed that the
virus is moving across Europe.

Success Has a Price (For the Listener)

[mp3, podcast, Gervais]

What MarketWatch.com calls "one of Apple's most popular podcasts,"
the "Ricky Gervais Show" is now in agreement with Audible to become a
subscription-based download starting next month.

Non-subscribers will pay $1.95 an episode, either on Audible's U.S.
and U.K. Web sites or at the iTunes Music Store.

Time will tell if the podcasts were popular because they were free,
Mr. Gervais is a comic genius, or a bit of both. I admit to
subscribing to them but have fallen behind in listening to them of
late. Doubtful I will be converting to a pay-subscription any time
soon. One does not remain a cheap-ass-bastard easily, you see.

Standing Up For My Rights, As A Consumer

[shopping]

Aaron Hopkins is my kind of a shopper. Now I might not have gone as far as he did I certainly can empathize with him over the 'receipt checkers' at the exit to more and more stores. Personally, I just now walk right past the exit-workers at Fry's. They are usually too busy checking some other willing victim's bag, too underpaid to bother to stop me, or both.

As you read this account, ask yourself how many people walked out of Best Buy with who knows how much merchandise while they were hassling this guy?

From the Vault

[music]

Three years ago, Clear Channel sold off the contents of Bill Graham's
music vaults to raise a quick $5 million. Now, one of the great
unearthed treasures among the posters, shirts, and historical
artifacts within those vaults came to light - thousands of hours of
classic live tapes kept in the basement of Bill Graham Presents.

Now, at www.wolfgangsvault.com, you can now listen to Jimi Hendrix at
the Fillmore in 1969, Pink Floyd at Oakland Arena in 1977, and Muddy
Waters and Paul Butterfield at the Fillmore in 1967, among many more.
It is possibly the greatest tour of the history of live rock one can
imagine.

All are soundboard copies, or, in other words, as good as any live
album. And now there is talk that the entrepreneur, Bill Sagan, 55,
who scooped these up may release a long line of related albums. That
alone could be worth more than his $5 million investment.

Cheney Follow-up

[FOX Cheney, VP, shooting]

The shooting is unlikely one of a dispute over politics as Burka said
Whittington has strong Republican credentials. However, he is also
known as an exemplary individual.

in hand with being an exemplary individual??

"faulty intelligence"

[news, Cheney, VP]

Vice President Dick Cheney revealed today that he shot a fellow
hunter while on a quail hunting trip over the weekend because he
believed the man was the fugitive terror mastermind Ayman al-Zawahiri.

Mr. Cheney acknowledged that the man he sprayed with pellets on
Saturday was not al-Zawahiri but rather Harry Whittington, a 78-year-
old millionaire lawyer from Austin, blaming the mix-up on "faulty
intelligence."

"I believed I had credible intelligence that al-Zawahiri had
infiltrated my hunting party in disguise with the intent of spraying
me with pellets," Mr. Cheney told reporters. "Only after I shot Harry
in the face and he shouted 'Cheney, you bastard' did I realize that
this intelligence was faulty."

Moments after Mr. Cheney's assault on Mr. Whittington, Mr. al-
Zawahiri appeared in a new videotape broadcast on al-Jazeera to
announce that he was uninjured in the vice president's attack
because, in his words, "I was in Pakistan."

An aide to the vice president said he believed that the American
people would believe Mr. Cheney's version of events, but added, "If
he was going to shoot any of his cronies right now it's a shame it
wasn't Jack Abramoff."

At the White House, President George W. Bush defended his vice
president's shooting of a fellow hunter, saying that the attack sent
"a strong message to terrorists everywhere."

"The message is, if Dick Cheney is willing to shoot an innocent
American citizen at point-blank range, imagine what he'll do to you,"
Mr. Bush said.

Why Japan Really Still Hunts Whales

[greenpeace, japan, whales]

At last June's International Whaling Commission's conference, the BBC
recently examined
the state of commercial whaling and found that for
all of Japan's success in winning support from other countries for
its campaign to ease the restrictions on whaling - especially smaller
countries which receive Japanese aid - the Japanese people are losing
interest. Whale meat is only served in a few specialist restaurants,
and occasionally appears on supermarket shelves. Younger people
almost never eat it and the surplus is causing the price to drop
dramatically.

So the question remains, why does Japan exert so much diplomatic
effort on this issue?

The official line is that whaling is an integral part of Japanese
culture, a practice dating back hundreds of years, but that isn't
quite true. A few coastal communities have been hunting whales for
centuries, traditionally with hand-held harpoons. But the rest of
Japan only became familiar with eating whale during the 20th Century,
as modern ships with harpoon-guns became available.

Whale meat was especially widespread in the difficult years after the
Second World War, when it was seen as a cheap source of protein.
However, as incomes rose, people switched to imported beef, or fish
like tuna and salmon. With such an abundance of high-quality protein
available these days, few Japanese see the point in eating whale,
which doesn't taste that special.

The more likely reason for Japan's determined campaign: "If the
current ban on hunting whales is allowed to become permanent," says
Hideki Moronuki, at the Fisheries Agency, the government department
leading the campaign, "activists may direct their efforts to
restricting other types of fishing."

As for the claims of 'science and research,' the World Wildilfe Fund
has described the scientific research carried out by Japan on the
whales it kills "a sham". Adding it is possible to get information
about the whales' diet and health from skin samples, without killing
them.

"Japan's whaling programme is about business and politics, but not
sound science," says the WWF.

Lego Pinball!

[Lego, pinball]

"The two showed their creation at the recent LegoWorld exhibition in Zwolle in The Netherlands where more than 500 children got the chance to play it over the six days of the event.

Obviously, the ball itself couldn't be made from lego blocks and a regular 1 1/16" steel pinball was just too heavy for the Lego motors, so a 1" glass ball was used as the main playing ball and a regular steel ball was used for the tilt mechanism. But the rest of the game is 99.99% pure Lego."

I See By PSP

[sony, psp, V&A]

If you have never been to the Victoria & Albert museum in London then
you don't know what you are missing.

By not living in London I know I missed the latest "Friday Late," an
event on the last Friday of each month centered around a theme or
exhibition, often featuring live performances, guest DJ’s and often
hands-on activities as well as a late bar. January's was hosted by
Playstation Portable and as a centerpiece there was a Jason Bruges
Studio created chandelier with 50 small TFT screens hanging from it.
Video was fed into a computer and software was used to split the
signal into components, through multiple outputs and up to the
chandelier.

Money, Well, Spent

[news,Iraq]

Excerpted from Molly Ivins' latest column:

# The special inspector general for Iraqi reconstruction released an
audit last week containing extensive findings of fraud, incompetence
and confusion. Among the billions of dollars listed as wasted, I
especially liked the $100,000 someone decided to spend to refurbish
an Olympic-sized swimming pool, except that all that got done was
shining the pumps. Soldiers used reconstruction money for gambling,
and millions were stored in footlockers and bathrooms.

"Is this anything like the line from 'Cool Hand Luke,' "Still shakin'
the bushes, Boss!"
