big game thoughts
Maybe it is a college thing, the loyalty that is inspired and maintained over the years. but it seems that with each passing year that kind of loyalty has been disappearing in the NFL. Maybe it was the shift of sports wear from fans to fashion - I mean, really, a pink New York Yankees hat?
Regardless, it is nice to know that there are still hard core fans of a team out there, not just a particular player. So if you want to support your team, why not get authentic with a proper set of NFL Jerseys? The selection at Fan Shop Inc. should more than have you and your gift list covered at prices you will be happy about well past January.
A few quick clicks and the football fan in your life is taken care of and heck, why not pick up something nice for yourself.
Straight, No Chaser
Read all about it on Twitter. Then ponder the implications. Then promise to try and keep this planet clean, thank you.
Trek Trailer Tweaked
A warning, it's 110 megabytes and as big as your head but for Classic Trek fans you'll want to play the last few seconds a few times before you shut the window. Now if only the Rotten Tomato reports of the "fairly comedic" bits were trimmed I would be more excited.
Should this be considered an "odd numbered" Star Trek movie?
fire and fuel
With a few clicks and a little work in the garage you could be speeding off to your relatives home in your audi turbo in time for Thanksgiving. Or maybe speeding in the other direction depending on your relationship with the in-laws. Still undecided? Check out their Learning Center and see all the advantages of adding forced induction systems to your vehicle.
Check out www.turbochargerpros.com and find the perfect turbocharger for your ride. That's where I'll be to see what I can to to spiff up my Civic.

HandBrake 0.9.3
On the flip side, no more internal DVD decryption. Seems that HandBrake will dynamically load VLC's copy of libdvdcss if you have it in your Applications folder in Mac OS X, and if you're on Linux, and you want to live on the wild side, you can install libdvdcss on your system and get the same effect.
Translation of the last paragraph from nerdese:
"We're not about to stop you from choosing to decrypt DVDs. If you're on a Mac, and you have VLC 0.9.x installed, you won't even notice the internal capability's gone. If you're on Linux, all you have to do is install a library."

ebel ladies: watch me now
Now days, we have more ways than ever to know what time it is, down to the femtosecond. Chances are you have a clock on your phone, your computer and on your TiVo, VCR and alarm system. So many ways that for more than a year now the phone companies have felt no need to provide a 'speaking clock' when you dial POP CORN.
That being said, wearing a watch is more fashionable that ever, particularly for those who are sporting the latest ebel ladieswatches. Take a look at the selection at The Watchery and see if you don't agree. I am particularly fond of the Ebel Beluga and with 98 options I bet you can find the one you like best, too, especially with many of them priced at more than 70% off retail!
Their shipping and customer service has been rated exceptional - many people getting their watches the next day after ordering! Give them a try and see if you can't find something to dress up your wrist this holiday season. You'll thank me for the money you have saved and be glad you have a cheap-ass bastard for a friend.
Train Trouble
I took the bus to Santa Clara and walked the block to the VTA office / 22 stop. That got me to Diridon in time for a 7:45 bullet and in time to see a young-ish male on the ground and 2+ plain clothed officers keeping him company and making sure he kept his hands on his head. A loudspeaker announcement was telling people to give the "law enforcement activity" some room.
Did not think pictures were advisable, given the circumstances.

Why I read the UPenn Language Log
"...according to Mr. Logsdon [Presidential historian from the University of Minnesota], if the Huckabee-Christ ticket makes it all the way to the White House, it could be historic in more ways than one: "If Huckabee is elected and then something happens to him while in office, we would be looking at our first Jewish president."

see the tree
Keeping good eye health is important and I don't recommend scrimping in that department but why are you still paying outrageous mall prices for your frames and lenses? Optical4less offers you everything you would want, like complete prescription eyeglasses (and more like free anti-reflective coating and free shipping if you order more than one pair). If your needs are a bit more complex they have you covered as well: tinted sunglasses, reading glasses and photochromic sunglasses are just some of the many options available.
I don't think I have mentioned the best part yet: $15 frames. At that price you can do what I have done, have a pair, a spare and sunglasses. Heck, at that price you can have a pair for every day of the week and still come under budget.
Don't help an expensive eyeglass 'boutique' pay the rent at the local mall, get them internet direct and save. If you still can't believe it, give them a try and see. The money you save can be your gift to yourself this season.

supercharge me
What I have always wanted to find is a rental version of the buick supercharger we used to have growing up. Of course gas was under a dollar back in the 70s so my parent's could rock that ride ('the white car') and a buick station wagon - what can I say, we were a buick family!
If you are looking for a mercedes supercharger like I am thinking of doing and want great pricing and fantastic customer service look no further than the pros at superchargerpros.com - they have great selection of new or remanufactured parts available to ship as soon as you give them a call.
So what are you waiting for? Get more fun out of your driving!

Meh Lab
According to the Associate Press, the expression of indifference or boredom has gained a place in the Collins English Dictionary after generating a surprising amount of enthusiasm among lexicographers. The publisher HarperCollins announced Monday the word had been chosen from terms suggested by the public for inclusion in the dictionary's 30th anniversary edition to be published next year.
"This is a new interjection from the U.S. that seems to have inveigled its way into common speech over here," Cormac McKeown, head of content at Collins Dictionaries said. "Internet forums and e-mail are playing a big part in formalizing the spellings of vocal interjections like these.

Fwd: BeatMyPrice Finds Deals, Integrates RetailMeNot [Price Comparison]
via Google Reader:
Just-launched price comparison engine BeatMyPrice comes from the folks who brought you BugMeNot and RetailMeNot, and puts those two services' "people-powered" ethics to good use. Here's how it works: you see an item you want to buy online at a certain price, but want to know if there are better deals out there. You enter the item name, URL, and price into BeatMyPrice.com, and hit the "Beat that!" button. BeatMyPrice lists results from various sources (including other users' searches), and includes better, the same, and higher-priced items than your entry—and it integrates coupon codes and promotions (like free shipping) from its sister site, RetailMeNot.
You can narrow down the results to only the sellers and target price you want to see. Check out a video clip from the founder which shows you BeatMyPrice in action.
As I'm on the hunt for a widescreen monitor, I plugged in a couple of listings from NewEgg into BeatMyPrice, and it did find me a cheaper (albeit smaller screen) price, but the result listing was a lot sparser than the one shown in the video. As more people use BeatMyPrice, the more results it will have to offer. Right now it desperately needs a BugMeNot-style bookmarklet for use while you shop for holiday gifts online.

CA: Thank Governor for Signing Landmark Pet Abandonment Bill
As I am sure you are aware, the subprime mortgage crisis that has devastated homeowners and the economy has brought with it a troubling trend: pets abandoned after home foreclosures. Bank employees who enter these deserted homes are often under direction to leave property--including pets--untouched until the foreclosure process is completed. As a result, many pets have been left to die.
Fortunately, fewer California pets will find themselves in such dire straits thanks to Assembly Bill 2949. Introduced by Assemblyman Mark DeSaulnier and recently signed into law by Governor Schwarzenegger, this law requires the owner of a property (banks or their agents) to notify animal control officials if pets have been left behind so they can be removed in a timely manner.
AB 2949 came out of Assemblyman DeSaulnier's annual "There Ought to Be a Law" contest, which asks constituents to submit ideas for legislation. Contest winner Sheri Kuticka recognized this tragic consequence of the housing market downturn, and suggested that something be done to rescue abandoned animals and provide care. She, along with the ASPCA and the California Animal Association, cosponsored the legislation.
Please join me to take a moment to thank Governor Schwarzenegger for quickly signing this bill--the first of its kind in the nation--into law.

the web means never having to decide alone
Which is why when it comes to webhosting, the first place those looking for a new service need to look is to the geeks at Web Hosting Geeks. As you might have guessed from the name, they look at web hosting and provide the reviews and ratings to help you get the most for your hard earned money. If you are looking for Blog hosting or maybe you want a free domain name, you should make this your first and possibly only stop.
Loads of valuable articles that can provide insight as well, like the benefits and risks of Overseas Hosting (a lower price than US or Europe based competitors, but should hosting be outsourced?) is something I never would have thought of.

WTF: Playmobile Roman Forum
Christians and slaves to be killed no doubt sold separately - look at that 'thumbs down' by the Emperor up there.
Me, I'd more likely want to recreate Star Trek:TOS 'Bread and Circuses'.
"Kirk, Spock and McCoy are captured on an Earth-like planet that possesses a 20th-century civilization with a twist: a Roman-style imperial system. They learn they are not the only Earthmen who have had to deal with it as they may."
I am sure you can find make borrow some Star Trek: TOS Playmobile figures.

It's What's for Dinner
Some day this will be a classic ad but even now I find it funny as all heck. Maybe it was because we used to go the Golden Corral and fill up on cheap beef and butter mints. And who can forget the Texas Toast!
Good times, back when I was a majour carnivore. How times change or do people change and time stays the same?
William Gibson on Undecided Voters
[...]
To put them (undecided voters) in perspective, I think of being on an airplane. The flight attendant comes down the aisle with her food cart and, eventually, parks it beside my seat. "Can I interest you in the chicken?" she asks. "Or would you prefer the platter of s▓▒░ with broken glass in it?"
To be undecided in this election is to pause for a moment and then ask how the chicken is cooked.'

initiative process was improperly used in an attempt to undo the
constitution's core commitment to equality for everyone by eliminating
a fundamental right from just one group - lesbian and gay Californians.
[...]According to the California Constitution, such radical changes to
the organizing principles of state government cannot be made by simple
majority vote through the initiative process, but instead must, at a
minimum, go through the state legislature first.

you're going to need pants
Which is why when you are looking for long lasting, comfortable and functional cargo pants it is best to go and shop where the pros shop. Take for example the 5.11 Tactical Pants from Operator Tactical Pants ™. As full featured or better as similar pants by the big name companies that are selling for up to twice as much. With the elimination of big name middle man and shipped factory-direct, the savings are immense.
Give them a look and see if these are not the pants for someone on your Christmas list. At these prices, buy two.

Wasilla hillbillies looting Neiman Marcus
According to two knowledgeable sources, a vast majority of the clothes were bought by a wealthy donor, who was shocked when he got the bill. Palin also used low-level staffers to buy some of the clothes on their credit cards. The McCain campaign found out last week when the aides sought reimbursement. One aide estimated that she spent "tens of thousands" more than the reported $150,000, and that $20,000 to $40,000 went to buy clothes for her husband. Some articles of clothing have apparently been lost. An angry aide characterized the shopping spree as "Wasilla hillbillies looting Neiman Marcus from coast to coast," and said the truth will eventually come out when the Republican Party audits its books."
Jon Carroll "Oh Dear, I'm Liberal"
To paraphrase a famous American political saying, what exactly did the liberal media do and when did it do it? What was the defining moment at which the liberal media worked its wiles and turned some voters against John McCain? Which lie, which distortion, pushed America over the edge?

change you can see and save
One change you can make for yourself is buying a new pair of eyeglasses. Holiday parties are coming soon and all the pictures that it implies, so why not treat yourself and pick out a pair and maybe a spare, that frame your face. Look at Governor Palin and how her glasses improved her look!
Of course you want to look good and if you are reading this I can bet you want to save money, but that doesn't mean you have to compromise on quality (or fashion)! ZenniOptical.com has a range of stylish glasses at their website starting at a low US$8. Single vision lens, sun sensitive lenses, sunglasses and bifocals at affordable prices because they sell only their own frames direct to the you, dispensing with the middlemen, a massive advertising budget or pricey mall locations. Having just spent many hours and two trips to one of these large mall-based firms with the woman I love I am reminded why every time we go in I vow never to return. Well, now I have an excellent recourse! Plus, I seem to not be alone on this front!
Check out the new arrivals at ZenniOptical and see how much you can save and thank me later.

Words Of Someone Smarter Than I
"Let me also confess that I have a bigotry, and it enters into my decision. Yes, I am a bigot. An I.Q. bigot. I have a real fondness for smart people. That's why I chose the friends that I have. That's why I hired particular people at ░░░░░░. And that's one of the reasons I married the woman that I married. Because. I. Love. Smart. People.
Barack Obama is wicked smart. We need smart. I don't know much about Joe Biden, but he certainly seems sharp too. John McCain is no dummy, but I think Barack's got him beat, and God knows that dim-witted bubblehead Sarah Palin has "C-student" written all over her. So part of my reason for my vote is based on sheer brainpower. I think the selection is offensive to America, and in retrospect, people will agree that McCain shot himself in the foot with that misguided choice."Monday, November 03, 2008

another halloween over
We ordered a take out pizza, had out 2 jack o'lanterns lit so we were prepared for whatever the night threw at us. It really wasn't until about half past six that we really started getting our doorbell rung about every 5 minutes. Quite a fair number of Spidermen and Disney Princesses. Scream ghosts still holding steady and only one professional sports figure in MLB gear.
In my youth if you didn' have a cool enough costume you could always use one your brother's NFL Jerseys and put a little black under your eyes and you were all set. Does this mean that sports are losing their appeal to today's kids in favour of video games? Or do they wear their team colours so often at school it isn't considered a 'proper costume' anymore?
KFOG Halloween
So this year's 10 @ 10 had a few songs I had never heard of and a few I should have had I been paying attention growing up. Good ol' dave Morey, always with a few tricks up his sleeve, I should have expected no less.
For the record the new one: The Toyes – Monster Hash.
The one I should know: Elton John – Funeral For a Friend. From the Good Bye Yellow Brick Road, sheesh.
