Style Never Goes Out of Style

I love when people save old catalogues, after a certain number of years what was once shinny and new quite often turns to 'what were we thinking.' Other times, the more things change the more they stay the same. Thankfully, a Swedish blogger living in Austria recently shared pages from a 1965 IKEA catalog.

I think I see part of our kitchen over there!

Great Post on Composition Books

Last time I was at Target I noticed their Composition Book selection... they're not just black and white anymore! Looks like Creative Perch has too with some great pictures!

It’s time for Back to School! What better way to get back into the fall swing of things than by picking out a favorite composition book (or two or three)?

Facebook the new Google?

Or is it the new internet? Or the new AOL? Whatever they are they are not anything right now.

make a match and make a mint

What would you say if you could to a 36 year old man who, along with his father, had just sold the Manhattan building at 14 Penn Plaza for about a $250 million profit? Well, you should know his name first of all - Andrew Borrok. You say you still need some more information before you know what to ask or what to say to him? Well then, lower the lights, sit back and watch this Andrew Borrok video.

Or maybe you would like to know what America's "Paper of Record" has to say about him. In that case, may I suggest that you read this recent New York Times Fashion & Style section entry: Andrew Borrok nytimes article. Sometimes it can be revealing what a person says about themselves and what their friends say about them - click over to the Andrew Borrok friendfeed , add him to your 'follow' list and then take a peek.

Give it all a read and then see what he can do for you and what you can do for him. See what a graduate of both the Columbia University Graduate School of Business and the Georgetown University Law Center has to say!

Suspicious Minds

I am going to have to assume that some (all?) computers are set up to
remember & connect to previous wifi sessions. What made me wonder was
someone was broadcasting an open node labeled "US Airways Free WiFi"
at the train station and I assume was hoping to attract someone
looking for free wifi?

What exactly would this hypothetical black hat gain from such
behaviour? Are they actually hoping to steal passwords? Data? Credit
card info? If anyone has any ideas chime in!

Space-themed Mini Golf in NYC

With two real ex-NASA rockets providing the background, Rocket Park Mini Golf subtly teaches that the same laws of motion and gravity that guide the path of a spaceship control the motion of golf balls here on Earth.

In a course designed by Lee H. Skolnick Architecture + Design Partnership, vibrant colors and graphics reminiscent of the 60s Space Age brings 'rocket science' down to Earth in "a way that would excite and delight people of all ages, even while they learned real physics!" said Lee H. Skolnick, FAIA and Principal of Lee H. Skolnick Architecture + Design Partnership.

"Rocket Park Mini Golf provides opportunities for families to encounter fundamental laws of physics in the nine-hole course," said Eric Siegel, the Hall's director and chief content officer.

Goodwill Gets Bad Donation

A land mine found in a Goodwill donation box in Arvada Colorado, a
suburb of Denver, and forced the evacuation of a strip mall.

The rectangular, olive-green box with the words "Front Toward Enemy"
raised the suspicions of Goodwill workers Tuesday. Arvada police say
the Claymore land mine didn't go off in the donation box and no one
was hurt and a bomb squad disposed of the device.

Police Sgt. Jeff Monzingo says it's unclear whether the device was
operational or where it came from. No suspects have been identified.

Rust Never Sweeps

[]

Introducing the Broomba, which does move around, but unfortunately does not clean. On sale for $40. Couldn't you do this with a proper Roomba?

Mobile Phones – the New Boombox?

[]

Not sure when this phenomenon began but about once a week I get to ride the lightrail with someone who thinks it needs a soundtrack. No, made that someone who KNOWS it needs a soundtrack and is willing to provide it, courtesy of their mobile phone.

I don't about your phone but mine and every one I have run into has a single speaker at best the size of a dime. Factor in the compression and the choice of music (usually rap) and you have quite the cacophony. What kills me is that half of the time they either grow weary of the tune or they are just playing their ringtones so you get about a minute of noise before they have to reload.

If they are trying to build exposure for their 'act,' might I suggest higher fidelity?

Is Your Job This Stressful?

An employee at a factory that makes iPhones in China killed himself after a prototype went missing. Sun Danyong, 25, was a recent graduate in engineering who worked in product communications at Foxconn Technology Group. Foxconn makes many Apple products at a massive factory in the southern city of Shenzhen, near Hong Kong.

The Southern Metropolis Daily newspaper said Sun (who was responsible for sending iPhone prototypes to Apple) noticed he was missing one of the sixteen units he received on July 9. He reported the missing iPhone on July 13 and his apartment was searched by Foxconn employees.

Sun jumped to his death from the 12th floor of his apartment building July 16. Apple Inc. offered its condolences Wednesday as the company waits for the results of an investigation.

Well This is Different - Blondie Performed as a Civil War Song

Amazing what a few chords and changing the tempo can do to a song you think you know backwards and forwards.

In a "Music Film" by Johnny St Ours, Old School Freight Train preforms a cover of Blondie's famous disco hit, "Heart of Glass". St. Ours sets the music to a reenactment of Civil War - The Battle of Rio Hill.

What Once Was Cool

Funny how quickly the cool turns into the amusing. The video from the first moon landing looks like a it was filmed on a bad webcam and this WIRED Magazine video promo from 1993 looks like it was made by grade-schoolers for a class project.

Enjoy this brief trip down memory lane.

fragmentary culture

The recent passing of Michael Jackson ("The King of Pop") and Walter Cronkite ("The Most Trusted Man in America") have made it clear that the monoculture we used to live in, even as recent as the 1980s, has disappeared – replaced with a fragmented niche experience where it seems just about every person has a different favourite musical artist and place to get their news. About the closest thing to a unifying element these days is Harry Potter and I am not too sure that even that will be for very much longer now that all the books in the series have been written and there are but two movies left to go see.

One of the main reasons for this splintering of of collective attention would have to be the rise of the modern high speed internet, allowing anyone anywhere to watch and read exactly what they are looking for with a mere touch of a few keys. There is finally enough broadband saturation in the United States to say say that digital tools we have are changing the way we live our lives each day, how we interact with our families and friends (both real and virtual), and how we learn and entertain ourselves.

When Is a Book Not a Book

In what could be described as a beautiful Machiavellian plot by the small independent and used bookstore cabal, Amazon Kindle owners awoke Friday to find books had gone missing, not only from the store 'shelves' but from their own devices that had been bought and paid for.

Welcome to the world of digital technology and the need to back up your own files because there is nobody looking out for you on the retailer side. Apple has hinted that they may charge you for re-downloading iPhone apps from them, everyone has seen the iTunes warning that 'digital files are valuable and should be backed up, but now Amazon has taken it one step further and deleted your purchases. To be fair I hear they did credit your account for the missing files.

The beautiful irony? The books that are now un-books? George Orwell's (albeit unauthorized American editions) of Animal Farm and 1984.

The word from Amazon Customer Service:

"The Kindle edition books Animal Farm by George Orwell. Published by MobileReference (mobi) & Nineteen Eighty-Four (1984) by George Orwell. Published by MobileReference (mobi) were removed from the Kindle store and are no longer available for purchase. When this occured, your purchases were automatically refunded. You can still locate the books in the Kindle store, but each has a status of not yet available. Although a rarity, publishers can decide to pull their content from the Kindle store."

Apparently while a contract is only worth as much as the paper it is written on, digital files are but a soap bubble subject to the whims of the publisher and they who control the transmition.

The hand that rocks the Kindle

Is the hand that rules the world.

You Never Can Tell

Just like in the late 20s everyone had a stock market plan an in the
early 00s everyone had a real-estate flipping plan, I think at this
point I think everyone has an iPhone. Today's sighting: older woman in
what might be called 'cruise wear,' nails easily an inch long complete
with full salon tips- white with black diagonals was gingerly tapping
away at her black iPhone.

I really wondered what apps she's rocking.

Then I figured it out. It was a Kongol hat - worn forward. Clearly it
was not Samuel L Jackson.

that new house is calling – real estate sms marketing

When you are looking for a new home and are trying to sell the old one, there is a delicate balance between selling the first and buying the second. Sell too soon and you are out on the street (or negotiating an expensive lease-back), Wait and sell after buying the second and you'll be paying double mortgage payments – like we did for more than a couple of months, which gets quite expensive rather quickly.

Why not let clients avoid the stress of having to monitor the real estate market via computer or smart-phone by letting them opt for real estate listings via SMS text messages to their mobile phones.

Not everyone has a smart phone yet and most calling plans have very liberal text messaging plans, why not help people put them to use with real estate sms marketing? The messages are text-coded so you get to keep your ads up-to-date and keep track of which ads are getting the best results. All this power right from your browser!

Last night I caught a very old episode of the Simpsons, I remember watching this when this first aired, however many many years ago that was. Was going to delete it with the other reruns that the DVR had caught in its net but something made me stop. I was never a huge Michael Jackson fan but didn't mean I had never heard of the man nor felt the traces of his influence.

Anyway, enjoy this memory when the Simpsons were funny and MJ was only a lovable eccentric.

Just in Time For the Last Potter Film?

[, ]

I was wondering if this was still in the works but according to the Orlando Sentinel (05 July), the The Wizarding World of Harry Potter is still quite well on its way to opening next summer:

[...] the $200million-plus "theme park within a theme park" that is scheduled to open by next summer in Universal Orlando's Islands of Adventure, has sparked a near-constant stream of speculation about just how the resort will bring Harry Potter's universe to life.

Universal has kept the project [...] largely shrouded in secrecy. Contractors working on the project have been required to sign confidentiality agreements, and the resort has offered few clues beyond a handful of artist renderings.

"Offeretti" is a combination of the words "offer" and "confetti" and calls themselves the Search Engine for Special Deals. Search for offers, coupons, promotions, special deals, discounts and bargains from local retail businesses. Combining search technology with social networking, Offeretti should enable customers to explore, discover and share offers with friends and family.

Speaking of Censorship

[]

Gizmodo cites unconfirmed sources that China Unicom will likely be selling an iPhone sooner than expected, but it will be one that does not have Wi-Fi functionality.

The Chinese government, which controls the nation's three major cellular carriers, said in the past that it objected to Wi-Fi in phones (perhaps because it's harder to sniff local packets than ones drifting through a wide-area network). According to reports, China Unicom has a deal to sell a GSM-based iPhone, like the ones sold elsewhere, but the license is for something where Wi-Fi is blocked. As TradingMarkets.com puts it: "Apple has to cancel the Wi-Fi function without changing other components."

Will it be removed or just deactivated? And how hard would it be to, cough cough, reactivate?

but can you get the parts

That was always my Father's mantra when it came to imported cars in the 70s and 80s. I figured he should know having owned, from what I can recall: a Volkswagen, a Rover, a Porsche and a Mercedes. I distinctly recall him saying it when in the late 70's, probably in response to the sharp jump in fuel prices – still less than a dollar, mind you – we went shopping for a diesel car and our first stop was at the local Peugeot dealer.

If you are driving a Swedish car and are in the market for SAAB or Volvo parts, you don't need to have a local outlet for parts you are in luck and still have a source: Swedish Parts Network. They are your on-line home for Saab Parts and Volvo Parts with a complete selection of Volvo Auto parts and Saab Auto Parts including many accessories. Selling at the guaranteed lowest prices and all come with Free Shipping.

Not convinced? Check out the numerous Independent reviews and shop with confidence! Thousands of satisfied customers have told their friends about the Swedish Parts Network. Everything comes with a full warranty and they stand behind what they sell. So what's stopping you from getting your vehicle back in top driving shape.

Bumped Off the Front Page

It may not be front page in the US any more due to the American short-attention span and Michael Jackson's demise but rest assured election strife in Iran still exists. Last night I read that Daniel Colascione and others will release a new program to provide unfiltered internet access to the people of Iran.

A software package for Windows, Mac and Unix systems, called Haystack, will specifically target the Iranian government’s web filtering mechanisms. "Similar to Freegate, the program directed against China’s “great firewall,” once installed Haystack will provide completely uncensored access to the internet in Iran while simultaneously protecting the user’s identity. No more Facebook blocks, no more government warning pages when you try to load Twitter, just unfiltered Internet."

Union Bank of No Longer Just California

Logo trend-watcher blog Brand New discusses the change of a local bank's logo in: Union Bank of Not Just California

As its original name implied, Union Bank has a big presence in the state of California but as the organization has grown, expanding into neighboring states like Oregon and Washington, and with two international offices and six in other states of the U.S., it was time to drop the "of California."

"I noticed the change but for the life of me couldn't picture the old logo. Now I see why. You can to, click and enjoy. Just be prepared to stay awhile."

skeeter season

Back when we were kids, mosquitoes were a occasional summer time nuisance but really that's about it, but recently things have become not so simple. What used to be just a case of the itches becomes more serious when you factor in West Nile Virus and the like.

I used to scoff at the possibility until we got a scare a few years ago when on holiday in Virginia and Washington, DC. The symptoms all matched up, never did go and get checked but certainly not an experience I would want to repeat.

So, what with the warmer months here it's that time again when you find yourself spending more and more of your day working and relaxing in the backyard - cookouts, sitting by the pool, and just relaxing in a chair with a cool glass and a good book. If it weren't just for those cursed mosquitoes!

Lucky for us, there are Mosquito Magnet traps – a long-term, scientifically proven mosquito control solution that has already saved many people's summers. How many other insect problem solutions have so many testimonials? Ones that work, of course! Read just a few of these mosquito magnet reviews and you'll be convinced! A healthy and happy Summer is so easy, check out how the Mosquito Magnet traps work by attracting and capturing the mosquitoes and other biting insects that are breeding in your yard and you'll be outside and enjoying your bug-free yard as soon as tonight!

First World Problem

A discussion came up about phone numbers that spell things and sadly none of our numbers are capable of spelling anything – all those pesky 1's and 0's. Closest I have is a GoogleVoice number: ELF SON 1.

I hear for $10 you can change the number, still debating if it would be worth it, do I really want more people calling me? Gut feeling is trending toward 'no.'

distressed call

I must have bought several pair of jeans all at the same time because they all seem to be falling apart at about the same time. I must have three pair now in the pile that I like to call "do not wear to work." Others in the household call it a pile of semi-dirty clothes that should either be in the wash or put away, but that is a story for another time.

Luckily for me, my co-workers and for you (even if you don't see me on a semi regular basis), Armani Exchange has just introduced "New Premium Denim starting at $98". Not a bad looking pair of pants if I may say so, almost as nice as the J101 - Painted Boot Cut, seen here:
I'd add the J127 - Spotted Bleach Slim Fit to the cart too since I so rarely buy pants, I better stock up. Besides, anyone who purchases a full price pair of denim from Armani Exchange, either in store or online between 7/7/09 – 7/19/09 receives a gift card for $20 off their purchase of $100 or more – valid 7/30/09 through 8/15/09.

Or maybe I'll just get lucky with the text A|X contest – they are giving away a pair of denim every day for the rest of July to everyone who enters by texting the keyword "DENIM2" to ARMANI (276264).

Armani Exchange interprets the sensual and unique style to create a casual, yet sophisticated collection for the young, urban and sexy. Follow them on Twitter: @ArmaniExchange.

WIRED Asks My ChromeOS Question

In one word - Why?

Chrome OS promises to revolutionize netbooks and other underpowered machines. But why bother? Your netbook already has a browser and access to Google’s applications. What could Chrome do for you and your netbook?

How much is the "Microsoft Tax" on a new notebook? $50? That's not enough discount to get me to buy one, is it for you?

One of my must-read music blogs, Popdose, took on United Artists Against Apartheit and the 1985 hit “Sun City” today. Full of loads of fun and interesting facts that I never knew despite spinning it quite often while behind the college turntables.

– Two of the verses feature rappers, a full six months before Run-DMC and Aerosmith would drop their game-changing collaboration.

– Daryl Hall turned down $2 million to play there

Check out the Artists United Against Apartheid – Sun City (12″ mix) and Artists United Against Apartheid – Not So Far Away (Dub mix) the watch the VH-1 Pop-Up video version while you are at it.

when worlds collide

If it happened to a friend it could happen to you and me – an all but new Mini Cooper with under three thousand miles on the odometer was recently plowed into by a run away SUV. The story has a happy, well, middle as the owner of the MINI was outside the vehicle when it all happened. How surreal would that be, to watch your brand new baby, most likely without even that all traumatic first scratch get demolished by a car three times its size.

They are now playing the insurance waiting game to see what will happen but if they were looking for an repair they could always go to auto body shop ontario. With the largest network of collision repair experts, this network of auto body shops has thousands of the all-important testimonials plus feedback ratings so you no one has to take any chances waiting to get a vehicle back to pre-accident condition.

Safety is their number one concern and these collision repair experts will never compromise the quality of their work. This has been a sponsored post.

Show & Tell

Interesting scene this morning on the train as a Palm Pre owner (yes,
my first wild sighting) compared keyboards with a Blackberry owner.

I don't follow the many offerings from Canadian smart-phone maker RIM
so in terms of a fair comparison I will have to leave it to the two
strangers on the train to decide who has the better physical keyboard.

Meanwhile I guess Apple whistles to itself on the way to the bank.

tweet marketing

Nice story in the New York Times today about how people who turn to Twitter to complain or comment about a business are getting direct replies form the very companies they are complaining about.

One example they used was for a JetBlue passenger who was not seated next to his wife and child on a full flight. 19 minutes after posting a request to the twitterverse at large he got a direct reply from someone at the company who got things settled for the group. When tweets can go viral in minutes, it makes sense for a savvy company to head things off at the pass before getting a public black eye.

Lego MiniLand Michael Jackson

Michael Jackson is exiting his limousine in front of the famous Hollywood’s Grauman’s Chinese Theatre amid paparazzi and fans under a marquee that reads “Thriller.” But which Michael will it be?

Voters at CNN.com can choose between five Lego models of Jackson during different eras of his career. From left to right in photo: Fedora Hat (black and white), Moonwalk (white and blue), Uniform (black and gold), Thriller (red and black), Billie Jean (red and blue).

If it were up to me, "Billie Jean."

Pea is suing the Pez Museum of Burlingame (California) for copyright infringement.
Let's hope this is case of required enforcement and not just because they can.

Heavy Metal

Last night I took a laptop home with me on the train. I had started an
Excel file on this machine and rather than find a USB drive or
emailing it to myself, I figured I'd just take the whole thing home.
Besides, I told myself, this way I can work on the train trip home.

Well, I did get some work done but with less room than a US Airways
coach seat and no (real) number pad, let's just say it was an
interesting experiment. Finished up the data entry at home, fired up
the wifi and sent it off, with an estimated 15 minutes left on the
battery. The PowerBook is now sleeping in my bag, no doubt ready to
wake up and tell me it's shutting down due to a low battery.

Can I say I think I understand Apple's push for a longer life battery?
Still not too thrilled by the 'technician required replacement' part,
that just seems like an engineering cop-out. But for people looking to
save a little weight, I see the appeal. There's nothing heavier than a
laptop with a zeroed out battery.
