see the light

In the latest issue of Sierra Magazine there was a story about an Electrical Engineer who took back the darkness for four days by hooking his Prius to an inverter (changing the direct current from the car's battery to the alternating current needed for the lights and appliances).

They did point out that unless you have a degree in Electrical Engineering it might be a better idea to go with the more traditional Electric Generator to cover your emergency power needs. With a Transfer Switch and a few other Generator Accessories and a bit of fuel you can ride out the next storm, outage or what have you with your freezer keeping your food cold and the heater keeping your toes warm.

Don't let the temporary interruption of the power grid make you change everything about the way you live – not when you with a generator you can stay warm and connected to the modern world. Check it out and see if it is the right decision for you and your family.

deer to my heart

Istock_000002248614xsmall_2There can be nothing more disheartening to a gardener to have worked so long and hard on your ornamental and vegetable garden to then discover that a herd of hungry deer have decided to make it part of their meal plan.

I know they were there long before you came to live in their neighborhood but there are ways to peacefully coexist with the four legged set and now, it can be even easier thanks to the FIRST Repellent on the market that comes with its own battery powered sprayer! Plus, the newest formula for NEW Deer Off® II contains MORE active deer repelling ingredients than the popular original Deer Off®. Featuring four times more putrescent egg, and almost twice as much garlic and hot pepper (capsaicin). Doesn't sound very attractive you and even less so to the deer. As an added bonus, this deer repellent is also ideal for keeping the rabbits and squirrels away, too.

This repellent is all organic so you are not harming anyone, just giving them a strong incentive to snack elsewhere. The Havahart® Deer Off® formula has a patented Dual Deterrent System™ which means it provides both a scent and a taste barrier to repel deer, rabbits, and squirrels. Ready-to-use and weather resistant deer repellent formula designed for large lawns and can used on up to 100 ornamental shrubs up to four feet tall. Click to learn about deer control, today for a better garden tomorrow.

Cheap Thrills for Mystery Science Theater Fans

Mystery Science Theater Fans Take Note!

Hulu.com has available three of the 'Film Crew' movies which were done by some of your favorite MST3K veterans (Mike Nelson, Kevin Murphy and Bill Corbett) a few years back. There's no 'bots but the same jokes and bad movie for your entertainment.

Netflix has them, too, if you are away from your broadband or simply don't have it (like me). The upside, at Hulu you can see all three for free!

wave of patriotism

The other day a local radio station was playing music from 1979 and interspersed were some news reports of the era featuring (then) President Carter as well as the departure of the Shah of Iran and the subsequent occupation of the American embassy. I recognized a few of the songs – I would have been a 'tween' if such things existed then and wasn't yet a big music listener. Oddly I vaguely remember some of the history but doubt I really fully understood the whole scope of the events until much later.

In hindsight, Carter is turning out to not as bad as we all were led to believe and it seems to me the Reagan mystique is fading a bit as time goes by. Of course now were are seeing Obama being both praised as our last best hope and labeled a socialist who is selling our country out to the Saudis.

It is too bad that we can't all just pull together as Americans and get the country back on a track toward profitability and stabilize the environment but I guess there will always be those who like the status quo and will seek to maintain it, regardless of how detrimental it may be in the long term.

Which reminds me that every time I put up and take down the outdoor Christmas lights I see our empty flag pole and think that I should be shopping for American flags before Flag Day, the Fourth of July and basically the summer returns.

Always feels good to live in American, just feels better lately.

Persistence of Memory

Lately I have been going through some old videotapes that go back (so
far) as early as 2001 and while it was amusing to see French gasoline
prices displayed in Francs (FF), I am not sure that even after I burn
them to DVD when or if I will be watching them, even if only to edit
out 99% of the junk to get to the five minutes of interesting footage.
I have to wonder if the ability to record so much of your life has a
downside in that there is little time to watch events from your own
past as it competes with the opportunity to be watching of everyone
else's.

WIRED has a story this month about how the newer the gadget the less
'magical' it seems. They use the example of personal video cameras –
what once was large, expensive and magical (I'm on TV!) is now a
camcorder small enough to fit in an Altoids® tin and costs just a
couple hundred dollars. The irony would make Yogi Berra proud, they
have become so cheap and ubiquitous that I can't recall the last time
I saw one being used by anyone. The last one I know I saw was being
used by some kids trying to perfect a skateboard trick at the local
bank parking lot. I am not going to count the PBS crew of two at work
filming the lab or the team at the train station, complete with dual
playback monitors and a cart of audio gear.

Perhaps Facebook and Twitter have made the publishing of every mundane
though or action so easy and common that nothing is becoming of
interest any more. Are we already seeing a pullback from the online
life? Is there some upper limit to the number of tweets we can follow
before it all becomes just noise? If AT&T and Apple really are
planning iPhone data plans that don't cost $70/ month will we see more
blogging or is this the last gasp of a business model trying to stay
relevant?

black flag, green day, true love

The other night we were looking though an old annual of mine from my Senior Year in High School and my first though was "my hair really was too short for my Senior portrait." I was going through a 'majour' punk 'phase,' and was being about as rebellious as you can get in a Northern California private school and still managing to avoid getting detention for 4 straight years.

The funny thing is that the Mrs. probably never would have looked twice at me and yet I would have crushed so hard on her back in those days – still do, by the way.

The good news for the current versions of me at that age? Now there is PunkMatch.com, a free punk dating site with a special focus on the punk rock lifestyle. Meet fans of punk music that are single and looking for love when you peruse their punk personals. Hey, it's 100% Free to join, plus you can make new friends, message them and make that connection with someone special.

iTunes 8.1 Breaks iPod touch

Apple has no official word but there is a growing list of comments and complaints on their discussion boards - see Topic : iTunes 8.1 "Verifying iPod" bug? for the every lengthening list.

I may try and downgrade to 8.0 after I check and see if there is any more fix suggestions. Not very impressive, Apple.

water out of order

A friend in New England just posted that his water heater has gone to Heaven. How did he know? "(I) woke up to find out that my hot water heater was leaking all over the basement. Questions:

- It's cooked, right? It was leaking from the bottom, that means it's rotted out or otherwise unrepairable?
- It's oil fired. (Welcome to New England... oil heat.) Should I switch to electric?
- Should I go tankless while I'm at it? Preliminary research seems to say yes to that one.

The consensus was yes, indeed the unit was done for, the debate came into how much if any cost savings there would be to go with a tankless model, with some people thinking they are more efficient while others quoted a Consumer's Report study which may prove that they don't save any money given the length of time it would take to recoup the initial investment.

I do know that if he needed a Roxboro plumber I could have given him a number to call. how to host

In the internet commerce world of today there are many reason to want to host your own content and as such, many hosts to choose from. The trick to maximizing your profit and minimizing your costs (and minimizing your aggregation) is to find the best balance between the two when you decide on who will be doing your web hosting.

One good way to get a sense of what is available to the new or renewing domain holder is checking Web Hosting Choice. They offer a great (and free!) research guide to help guide you on your selection of just the right web host for both personal websites or your budding business website. By focusing on offering a simple and easy to follow site, they are able to help experienced users as well as the novice select the optimal web hosting plan that best suits your needs, be it a small starter site or if you already have grown into a large eCommerce destination.

The Web Hosting Choice site ranks the industry's ten best hosts using a measure of their affordability, reliability, uptime and the host's technical support. These aren't old listings, either, their Best 10 Web Hosting Sites list was last updated April 13th, 2009 – today! So if you need help in selecting a host, let Web Hosting Choice give you the reviews you need to make the right choice.

on the door baby

The B-52's classic song "Love Shack" is an amazing twenty years old this year and to my ears remains a classic. There is still debate in our house about the last lines of the song, you know, the past that begins:

Bang bang bang on the door baby!
I can't hear you
Bang bang bang on the door baby!
Bang bang (X4)
On the door, on the door baby.
You're what?...

Now I used to hear this as 'en route - busted' but it seems now the consensus line is:

Tin roof, rusted!

So, one mystery solved, only years after the fact.

That solved, if you have a roofing need in the greater Salt Lake City, Utah area then you need to go and visit the only Salt Lake City roofer you will need.
Nielco Roofing & Sheetmetal has been helping the people of the Beehive State keep the elements at bay for years. If you need a recommendation, talk to your neighbors, your friends or your family, they will tell you that Nielco has what it takes to get you fixed up and satisfied. better yet, call a few places and get some bids, you will see who can keep that roof over your head in top shape for a fair price and as time frame you can live with.

24 hour party people

Have you ever wished there was something in the States like the web site 'Rave About It'? I mean, if this were Australia I would be about to do a simple search on something like ' catering melbourne ' and immediately have a short list that I could trust and start checking out for this work event.

I know there is Yelp but lately I have not been too happy with their behaviour. Come on internet, exploit that niche and help me save money and impress the coworkers. How is it that someone can let this opportunity go by, where are all the venture capitalists and their Sand Hill Road money?

Glad Not to Have This Work Problem

And I quote:

i come into the office in a black shirt & flat front khaki colored slacks. apparently my office is NOT a club & only white or blue shirts are acceptable and flat fronts are FRIDAY only. so i am told to goto the store and change now or i am fired.

sweets for the sweet

Last night we finally found the last, elusive box of Easter decorations. There was some great discussion at our house as to where it might be and what was in it, fortunately inside were some of the marble eggs and wooden rabbits so we both knew something was missing, but it was not until last night that we finally decided to pull every box we have in the garage down and inspect the contents that the mystery was solved. Lesson learned: label your boxes and stack them together!

Having found the box we could then proceed to do up the house in Easter style, eggs and rabbits with the odd Steiff lamb in there for effect. Of course empty eggs may be interesting to our cat (we found one plastic egg two rooms over from where we were unpacking) but to me they need to be filled with Candy of some sort, jelly beans are always a good stand by, malted milk eggs are safe from everyone in our house but me, and maybe, this year we'll try some sugar free candy just for good measure.

I was thinking also of a candy bouquet instead of a traditional Easter basket this year, as well. Can't have the same thing every year, right? Actually, give me a (large) bowl of Chocolate Holland Mints - you know, the ones with the soft peppermint centers dipped in dark chocolate and coated with a minty sugar shell, and I am in heaven. OK, enough blogging, this is making me hungry!

Side of Wax

The A.V. Club lists 25 albums that work best when listened to from start to finish. I remember in college a friend had a vertical turntable that would play whole LPs without the need to flip the record and one night a group of us stayed up well past dawn not noticing the number of hours we were listening due to the increase in music per change.

Funny how CDs made this easy but mp3s were like a return to the days when singles, or 7"s were the norm. Perhaps we've come full circle.

Kindle Readers Protest eBook Prices

Straight to you via the sour grapes department over at Google Reader comes:

Kindle Readers Ignite Protest Over E-Book Prices

Apparently a group of Kindle users are protesting the price of e-books being higher than $10. Their rationale is that Kindle books cannot be distributed, traded or sold, and should cost much lower than their paper counterparts.

Seems to me they bought a pig in a poke and *now* have discovered their folly and want someone else to blame than themselves. Look up 'razor and blade' in any econ textbook, friends.

Sleep Dealer: Put Me Down for Yes

[]

Set in a futuristic world of have-nots, Sleep Dealer shows how 21st-century gadgetry sucks resources from the world's poor and channels them to its wealthy villagers are forced to buy water for their crops from an armed, English-speaking robot. Most of the village's healthy men have bolted for Tijuana to look for work in cyberfactories. And the multinational imprint is seen almost everywhere.

As one poster put it, this sounds like a cross between the Diamond Age, William Gibson Books, and Crash. I would say I am a fan of all three so let's hope this takes the best from all and knocks it out of the park.

spend money to make money

Before you can make real money on the internet you are going to have to have you own site and having your own sight really requires to have your site hosted by professionals. So, if you are like me, you don't mind hiring professionals, you just want to be sure that you are getting a good price and good service for the money you are laying out.

Which is why you should look for independent reviews when shopping for a new web hosting service. Find the best web hosting out of the many providers that exist quickly and easily. With only a few clicks, you can find cheap web hosting services for less than $10 dollars a month, many complete with (at a minimum) one free domain registration and usually thirty day money back guarantee.

Reviews work best when we all review our web hosts — so get reading and writing and let other webmasters know your thoughts on what makes the people hosting your data the best or the worst!

talk about tats

A few years back it seemed like every single person in the lab I was working in was either getting a tattoo, just back from getting some ink work done or at the very least, talking about getting one. While I think the mad rush to get ink on skin, there is obviously sill the desire in people, I noticed a new shop opened just outside of downtown on my commute the other morning. (I was still rather sleepy and I looked out the window, saw a large neon TATTOO sign and a glowing black light skull mural on the shop's back wall. For a second I wasn't sure where I was and how far past my stop I had ridden!)

If you like your tattoo, like the thought of others who sport a bit of flash here or there, or just want to ask the inked about them or simply ask 'why', there is a new chat site being developed with just this sort of community in mind. Check out the all new Tattoo Chat Room, get yourself a screen name and get talking.

If had anyone in your family raised or were raised by anyone who lived through the Great Depression you know the importance of saving and making do and probably have the saying, "use it up, wear it out, make it do or do without" thoroughly memorized.

Which is why when it comes to clothing that lasts and doesn't require mending, the Tactical Tailor should be a place to shop, even if you are not in Law Enforcement or any other specialized field of that nature.

See what they have to offer and calculate the months of use by he cost and you will see how the already big savings are magnified. As a bonus, if you are hard on your clothes due to your job or your fun (ie; are you into paintball?) you will be sure to find something you can use here.

painted ladies

With the varied neighborhoods, architecture styles and even the ground the houses are built on, San Francisco can prove to be quite the challenge to the home owner who wants to have some work done on their home.

Regardless if you are working on an older home or want to keep your brand new town home looking its best, you really should look to hiring a contractor and for those looking for San Francisco general contractors there is a one stop web site now for all your building, rebuilding or remodeling needs.

Why go through the hassle of permits and bringing the building materiel to your home when with a few clicks you can have an estimate and the workforce come right to your home while you sit back and supervise.

A full remodel is a pain in itself, why not make it easy on yourself and hire the best?
